Update On Update On Book Challenge

So apparently How To Teach Filthy Rich Girls isn’t in my library’s circulation at all. Like as far as they’re concerned, it doesn’t exist. I can get it used on Amazon for $3 plus shipping but that involves negotiation with the dh, so I’m putting the Tamora Pierce book back on my challenge list and temporarily at least, taking the Zoey Dean book off…

I returned Jane Eyre because it’s terrible so I won’t be finishing it, but I picked up the 2nd and 3rd books on my list, the Tamora Pierce book and also the Well of Lost Plots by Jasper Fforde, so I can start reading a good book soon hopefully… I’ll update my original post for the Fall Into Reading challenge again soon…

Again With The Randomness Of Six

Patrice @ Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman tagged me to do the 6 Random Things meme, wherein I tell you six random things about myself. I could swear I’ve filled out this meme a couple times, but never one to pass up an opportunity to talk about myself, I’ll give it a go. For added fun, I’ll try to make it six NEW random things about me, k?

Before we get started, let’s get a few rules clear first, shall we?

1.Post the rules on your blog. (check)
2.Write six random things about yourself. (checkity check)
3.Tag six people at the end of your post. (check-aroonie)
4. If you are tagged, JUST DO IT, and pass the tag along. (peer pressure check)

  1. I have the hiccups. I’ve had them for almost 30 minutes now and I’m thinking about standing on my head while drinking a glass of water, so if you’d like to jump out of my computer and yell BOO, now would be the time…
  2. I think my foot is falling asleep, but I’m weird and I’m not moving it, because despite that half asleep feeling, I’m strangely comfortable. Anybody else do that? I bet Patrice is like, “why oh why did I tag Jen?” now, don’t you think?
  3. I told my husband that for my birthday (Christmas Eve, send birthday and Christmas presents to Momma Blogs A Lot @ Blogland USA) all I want is my own domain to be self hosted on Word Press. And he said OKAY. Which means if I want to change my blog name, I need to come up with a newer better one in three months - any ideas or do you all love the name I have now and would be heart broken if I changed it?
  4. I worked out today for approximately four minutes and I was exhausted and keeling over at the end of it. I swear I’m not in ridiculously bad shape, but the strange little “step aerobic” machine that we got at Brookstone is like a slave driver – I think they said that 10 minutes on this thing was the equivalent of a  60 minute workout, so I think what I did was like equal to 20 minutes? That’s not so terrible right?
  5. I’m kind of hating Jane Eyre. I want to finish it, because well challenge and book club and pride… but… I really don’t like it. I mean, now that it’s finally no longer JUST about a sad little ten year old orphan it’s a bit more interesting and I mean, I read the Eyre Affair so I kind of understand what’s GOING to happen and would like to see that play out, but I think Charlotte Bronte and Nathaniel Hawthorne could have been literature soul mates and that’s not a compliment…
  6. I think I’m going to buy books for all the kids on my Christmas list, but now I need to figure out if the books I have in mind are un-owned by the kids I want to get them to, which really just means asking their parents but ughhhhh that’s going to involve calling and emailing people and I’m lazy. For all the family grown assed relatives, I’m making mini loaves of cakey bread stuff, recipe to be determined but cute mini loaf pans have been purchased for $1 each, cool right? And my besties are all getting a hand made craft, but I think it will be cute, so no need for any of them reading this to disown me yet.

Sooooooo who wants to tell me six random things about themselves? Anyone… for once I think I’ll tag people and see who’s paying attention. That means YOU:

  1. Ange @ Red Knows How
  2. Amanda @ Funkepunkemonke
  3. Kat @ Sunshine & Lemonade
  4. Meg @ Queens Fort Mama
  5. Susie @ Raising The Boys
  6. Jenni @ Jiggety Jigg

How many banned books have you read?

Pride & Prejudice: Cinematic Duke Out

I’ve now watched or attempted to watch 3 versions of Pride and Prejudice in “movie” format – the contenders included:

  • Pride and Prejudice movie (1940)
  • Pride and Prejudice movie (2005)
  • Pride and Prejudice BBC Miniseries (1995)

The results of these three movies were varied indeed, so let’s break it down, shall we?

The 1940′s Pride and Prejudice starred Laurence Olivier (Mr. Darcy) and Greer Garson (Ms. Lizzy Bennet). It was awful. At least, the first 10 minutes or so were so terrible and painful to watch, that I never finished it. I have a life, you know, and precious little minutes to watch movies like this, so I moved on, gave it 1 star on Netflix and moved the Kiera Knightly version to the top of my queue post haste, then packaged up this DVD to send back immediately. No hard feelings. But seriously, the Bennet sisters looked like they were in their 40s, their mother was the biggest harpie crazy woman, which I know is accurate, but seriously, she was WORSE than all Mrs. Bennets I’ve seen thus far. Horrible.

The 2005 version was the first I’d ever seen, so I was rewatching this one. It already had bonus points for being interesting even before I’d read the book, but I remembered not having fully understood the whole movie and struggling to keep the different cast members straight. This was not a problem having read the book and I actually found this version someone rushed, but I LOVED the casting. This movie currently is my favorite for casting all around. Kiera Knightly plays Lizzie, Matthew Macfadyen plays Mr. Darcy. My only real beef with this movie was that the main males (Mr. Darcy and Mr. Bingley are kind of ugly. But after seeing the BBC version, I take this back as only Colin Firth is more handsome than anyone in this version. I love the scenery and some of the added scenes that aren’t in the original are actually wonderful. I go into more details on this here.

And now the moment I know some of you have waited impatiently for. Did I love it? Wholeheartedly, yes. Better than the 2005 version? Ummm…. toss up? Colin Firth for sure = love, although looking back I kind of like him as MUCH as Matthew Macfadyen but in different ways if that makes any sense. Jennifer Ehle, ditto – I like her a LOT, she’s definitely one of the better actresses, but so was Kiera Knightly. They actually remind me a lot of each other if that makes any sense. Casting seems well done, except, forgive me, Jane was terrible. Temperatment and acting were fine, but I just didn’t LOVE her – they got it much better in 2005 with Rosamund Pike. But I love that being as LONG as it was, they had ample time to go into details and really have fun with it, really tell ALL. I loved losing myself in this movie, though I suspect my poor son didn’t love it as much as he was forced to watch almost an hour of it in bits and pieces as his nap time ended in moments I wasn’t ready to simply hit “pause” – which I’ve heard is a normal reaction to this miniseries!

So, in short – of all 3, the 1940s version is a clear loser, but I have to say 2005 and 1995 are a tie. If I could move this over here, and that over there, and combine a couple of things and have my Ehle and Knightly combined… I’d be a happy P & P fan indeed.

Which movie versions do you like best? Anyone out there a fan of the 1940s version that thinks I should give it another chance?

An Influential Top 5 Tuesday

I think we can safely say the bar has been raised. This Tuesday isn’t about favorite snack food or fall tv – no fluffy stuff for us today – Dana @ Supernanny Where Are You? wants to know who are the 5 most influential people in your life? Who has helped define who you are today, and why?

Anybody else ready to kind of lean over your desk, into your computer, onto someone else’s computer and sneak a peek at their answers? Anybody? REALLY, nobody? JUST ME? Well… then… I guess I’ll just pretend that thought wasn’t there… Boy am I ever super pumped for this week’s question, surely I could name at least 15 people easily and with flair, but I don’t want to make anyone else out there feel all inferior and whatnot, so I’ll just trim it back down to five people – easy peasy like.

Alright… let’s go…

Well the first one that comes to mind, we’ll call her (1) is my  grandmother. Growing up without a constant “mother” figure in my life (and by that I mean, since my mother and father divorced when I was like 3 and my father got sole custody and I pretty much never saw my mother again ever, though we do talk a bit now online…) my grandma on my dad’s side pretty much assumed the role in my mind. And there is no better role model. My grandma can do anything, with flair, and if she can’t, she’s been fooling me for years. Crafty (she can do ALL crafts and does them well), educated (I haven’t found a subject yet she can’t talk knowledgeably about), motivating (she is the ultimate ego boost for all around her and believes that everyone should have someone in their life always at the ready to tell them how wonderful, clever and amazing they are), loving wife (she has taught me everything I know about being a good wife, for instance, how to pretend you can’t do something even if you can, and I think my husband would tell you I’m doing a good job, so thanks goes to her), stylish and well informed, my grandma has me in awe on a fairly constant basis. Literally, while growing up, when I wondered, “What do I want to be when I grow up?” my answer has always included “a grandmother” because of her.

Of course I think my father ties with my grandmother in level of influence but since this is a Top 5, we’ll call him number (2) but you should know he’s never been number 2 in my book, he’s simply number two on this list. My father, as you have now read, raised me mostly by himself, while working 60 hour weeks. Which involved living with his mother for several years so that somebody could be at home to take care of me when I wasn’t in school but he was at work (and experience tells me that living with your parents while raising a child is HARD so kudos to him for doing it as long as he did). Yet I never felt a loss for our time together because all of our time together has been quality. He is loving and smart and passionate and has worked hard to raise me to not make his mistakes, but to not hide from the mistakes I do make. And he’s an even better grandfather. Since growing up and leaving the nest, I’ve continued to see my father make his dreams come true, try new things, find true love and in general, make me exceedingly proud of him.

(and now I sit and think hmmmmmm for hours on end, but then pretend I didn’t)

Okay, I know she’s going to blush incessantly for this, but remember my bestie who just started her own blog, (3) Red Knows How? Well, she is truly inspirational. I will try not to go into too many details, but let’s just say, has two beautiful girls with one loving husband, making them the perfect family of four, held her chin up against a lot of flack and drama, supported her family when her husband couldn’t, has already swam the seas of homeownership and a few careers and now has an amazing work at home job that most people I know could only dream of. And even when you would look at her and think, “How does she do it?” when people around her are struggling, she always lends her helping hand, a la Mother Teresa. Her life is a struggle, but she always manages to make it look easy, to me at least. There is nothing this woman can’t accomplish, no matter how crazy the world around her gets, she always, in the words of Tim Gunn, “makes it work.” A few years ago a lot of things started to happen in my own world that were vaguely reminiscent of her own struggles and I think it’s thanks to her that I’ve done as well for myself as I have. If I can be half as competent and accomplished as she is, I’ll be a happy woman.

(4) Have I told you much about my in-laws, because THEY are amazing people. My mother-in-law is another one of those women who is always reaching out, always helping those around her, while raising a family of FOUR children who all happen to be geniuses. I’d love to tell you I’m exaggerating, but I’m not. And I don’t think you need to imagine how much trouble truly smart children could get themselves into – the phrase knowing too much for your own good comes to mind. And this woman has done it all. She has given her children the childhood that I dream of for my own brood and sometimes wish I’d had myself. If I could emulate my mothering style off of anyone, she would be a prime candidate in a lot of regards.

(5) Over the past couple of years I’ve become seriously interested in this planet and what I can do to help it and the people in it. I’ve picked up some bad habits in my life but lately I’m starting to pick up good ones, too – EASY ones like shopping with reusable bags. I remember talking about how I wanted to do it someday and a friend of mine, Rochelle, said, “So do it.” And I realized, “Um, yeah, why don’t I just do that?” And she’s been helpful like that in a lot of regards. She’s a big Greenie you could say and very accomplished, along with being a wonderful mother and wife, but it’s her drive to DO the things that matter that has really inspired me to stop sitting and dreaming about the woman I could be someday, and to sometimes, get up and just DO it.

So there you have it – some of the people who have made a difference in my life, mainly by being amazing and doing so in my presence and allowing me to think, “That’s how I would do that.” Let me take this minute to address those five people, even though they will likely not be reading this, except of course for Red, and say “Thank you, thank you very much.”

Who has influenced YOUR life?

Roll Out The Welcome Wagon

One of my very very best friends just started her own blog (after perhaps a bit too much persistence on my part? :P ) called Red Knows How. She’ll probably talk a lot about her family (obviously), working from home and of course all the books she’s reading (she might read more than I do – actually, she DOES read more than I do, so she aught to have a lot to say about that). I’m sooooo excited – and you should be, too. She is one the funniest, cleverest girls I know, and modest to boot! So I want you all to go check her out and give her a big warm bloggy welcome.

Welcome to the club, bestie. I hope you love bloggy land as much as I do – I know bloggy land will love you. :)

Meme Me Baby, One More Time…

Saw this short little meme on Nancy’s blog, Life With My Boys:

1. Where do you fold your laundry? I fold our laundry in the laundry room of our building before bringing it back into our apartment, right on top of the washer and dryer, which is taller than my son at least at the moment. He likes to hand me the clothes out of the dryer while I fold them, but that’s about as involved as I like him to be at this point, otherwise the clothes would never be folded!

2. Must you be sure the dishes are washed before you go to bed each night? I’d like to think I did that, and sometimes I do, but it isn’t necessary, just nice to see done. I at least hope they’ll all be rinsed, so nothing gets too hard to wash overnight.

3. Do you use caller id to screen your calls? Well I only have a cell phone so it’s kind of hard to avoid the caller ID, but I think I would anyway – some calls, like from telemarketers just aren’t more important than sitting down for dinner or finishing a conversation with my husband.

4. Do you let the low fuel light come on in your car before you fill up? No, once I notice it dip below the last line I try to fill it as soon as possible, although I’ve been more lax about that lately than usual, it still hasn’t gotten a low fuel light anytime recently (but I can tell you that my car will go a LONG way even after that point – learned that in college the hard way).

5. Are you a registered voter? I’m in between voting registrations since moving (which means I did not vote in the primaries, unfortunately) but I’ve just filled out the majority of my registration form this morning and I’m hoping to bring it in to submit this week along with one for my husband.

6. Breakfast for dinner is one thing, but can you eat dinner for breakfast? No, I can hardly eat breakfast foods in the morning never mind anything else.

7. Do you click on the ads you see on people’s blogs? Never for anything selling anything, but I click the buttons for memes and groups and challenges and the like.

8. Do you just want to yell at smokers who are clearly standing within 50ft of the door at a restaurant? Well maybe not yell at them, but I certainly don’t like seeing people smoke on any occasion or at any location.

Monday Morning: Monday Afternoon Style

Well my friends, it’s time once again for Monday Morning with Karen @ Write From Karen. This week’s hodge podge of questions are about happiness, breakfast foods, politics and growing pains. If you decide to play along on your own blog, be sure to comment and let me know and also link up at the main post here.

The September 29th Questions are:

1. How do you define happiness? I guess to me, happiness in the long term means being surrounded by people I love who also love me, succeeding at the things which are important to me and knowing I’m living the best life I can. Short term? Happiness can be anything – a pound lost, a good book gained, your child’s laughter – knowing my son is happy makes me very happy indeed.

2. What did you have for breakfast? (If not this morning, tell us what you had the last time you had breakfast). This morning I had a glass of strawberry carnation instant breakfast and half a mug of coffee (and a glass of water with my gargantuan multivitamin).

3. On a scale of one to ten, how sick are you of the presidential campaign? Do you talk about politics on your blog? What about in real life? Why or why not? I’d say I’m about 75% sick of this election. I have talked about it a bit on my blog, but not too much as it’s not a topic I’m normally giddy to read about myself, but being an election year, it is important and thus more interesting to me than usual. In real life, I do talk about politics, especially in an effort to further my own knowledge on subjects, but I try very hard not to argue about politics, because that can be draining and pointless.

4. What about your life today would surprise your teen-aged self? I think she’d be surprised to know that I’m not working, but rather a stay at home mom, and probably also a little surprised to learn that, in fact, her entire family WAS right and that because she kept eating “like that” and exercising “not at all” she would gain the weight eventually and have a very hard time putting the weight off (as evident by the weight still being here at present).

Looking Fine 2009: Week 5 Update

So Am I going to be…

?

I gained a pound. I think that goes to show you that being “pumped” and “excited” and “optimistic” while dieting might be setting yourself up for failure. But let’s evaluate, shall we? During the week, per usual, I did well with eating – my water consumption might be a bit down but I think that’s because I keep finding fun beverages to buy and then don’t want to waste them. But THAT mostly happens in the evening. Whatever. I also keep neglecting to eat breakfast and once or twice last week, lunch also. Which probably means I get ravenous at dinner or after dinner. This weekend was game night so you know I ate delicious pizza, my favorite potato chips and drank SODA ::gasps::

Also, we ate out twice this weekend, we had lunch out twice – once at a KFC / Taco Bell, in an effort to save money (the other was Applebees, soooooooo good and totally worth it) KFC not so much and I’d have gone home to eat, but we were an hour from home and ill prepared, I know, totally my fault – but I got a pretty rain coat from LL Bean that tucks into a pocket in the hood for easy storage – so cool!!!

Oh right and exercise. So that 10 minute dance hurrah hurrah DVD? I realized a problem with this DVD included (but was not limited to) the fact that I lack all coordination and dance like a white girl. I.E. badly. I can jump around and make goofy faces with the best of you, and my son got a kick out of it, but ask me to step in specific places at specific times? Not likely. And after 5 minutes I was exhausted… and I never put the DVD back in. I guess I aught to return it for something else not involving dancing. But let’s be honest, guys, fat blasting dance mixes… it’s step aerobics. I won’t lie to you, they shouldn’t either.

I wish I had a big beautiful elliptical machine instead of the strange dwarf midget version we got on the cheap that clutz = me has a hard time staying on without falling and hurting myself and DAMN is it exhausting and quick – I can’t last more than 2 minutes on that thing. I want to work out for 60 minutes, not 2, not 6. Any ideas that don’t involve a gym membership, because let me tell you how much that isn’t happening. We actually just canceled our gym membership which we had for almost 1 year and used religiously for 2 months and then never again.

And walking? Yeah, we already do that, a lot, and apparently it doesn’t actually equal exercise since we don’t do it CONSISTENTLY every day or some crap. Whatever. I’m feeling discouraged, but I haven’t given up, so that should count for something, right?

Did I mention the delicious apple pie I made Saturday? Or the delicious cherry pie I made the next day? Who said baking was a good idea? I BAKED guys – that should equal cheering not tsking. Okay the halloween sugar cookies I got from Stop and Shop aren’t as impressive to tell you about, but they were DELICIOUS…

Fine I’ll admit, apart from that 5 minutes of DVD time, I pretty much ignored the diet all week until I hopped on a scale Monday morning and said, “crap, what happened?”

Jen @ Daily Mish Mash (our fearless leader who is also a bit discouragedish after a week of slacking off, which seems to be the general consensus this week of Looking Fine by 2009) wants to know what your mini goals and maybe mini rewards are for this week? I think mini goals are where it’s at – a major goal is all well and good, but without mini goals, it’s easy to forget your on a “diet” at all.

So my mini goals this week are to DRINK more water and to cut back on snacks and eating out of home which I was doing REALLY good on until game night i.e. evil night for diets everywhere. Excepting the leftover pie and sugar cookies I will try to be good. Oh and the apple cider. Okay, I’ll share all those things and throw them out by the weekend, how’s that?

Okay, my mini goals are REALLY to drink more water and get my hands on a new DVD for working out or a new GOAL without a DVD. Any suggestions that I haven’t already tried are welcome. And I’m also hoping to not gain more weight from my delicious snacks that invaded my house when I wasn’t thinking.

Maybe my goal will be in the form of those mini treats? Like I can ONLY have pie or cider or cookies IF I worked out AND had 3 glasses of water that day… that seems like sort of reasonable… And when the snacks run out I’ll replace them with a better Mini Reward that doesn’t involve junk food, but at least in the mean time, I’ll only have snacks if I’ve done good already that day. That’s better than eating junk food for no good reason, right?

How about you?
