A braided bun for ballet.

braided bun

One of the small perks to ballet lessons is that each week I get to practice putting her hair in a bun for class. Buns aren’t actually a requirement at the 4 year old level but she’s into it and I like the challenge.

Being a wiggly four year old, I can’t manage to do an actual professional bun because she won’t let me use bobby pins or anything and she only cooperates for a few minutes. So, as I’ve mentioned in the past, that cute bun cover that I found at Target has been my saving grace. Take that thing off and the whole thing will fall apart. But it always stays on securely all through her hour long dance class and a trip to the grocery store afterward. Well worth the five dollars that I spent on it.

We’ve been having fun playing with different styles each week. This weekend I did two small braids on the side and then swept them into the whole thing, creating almost a crown effect and she was THRILLED. I’m sure this is Up-do 101 here but I didn’t do much of this stuff at all growing up so it’s monumental stuff for both of us still. Living vicariously, you could say.

Any tips on how to better secure that bun without the use of bobby pins? I love that bun cover but it would be nice to do an actual real true bun that doesn’t require smoke and mirrors to hold together.

I’d love any bun / up do tips and tricks if you have any!

I got no tips. I am hopeless when it comes to hair. I have a few things I have tried, but it’s hard when they don’t stop moving!

That is so cute! I love it. I wonder if I could manage to do this with my daughter’s hair!

I love this one. I struggled with my daughter’s bun for ballet class too as she used to moan about all the hair clips. I found something similar to what you have and it works like a charm 🙂

I just saw something similar to this: http://www.target.com/p/revlon-sophist-o-twist-perfect-hair-bun-maker/-/A-14753324#prodSlot=medium_1_1&term=bun
at Target the other day but for kids (so maybe a little smaller?) for $5 and it seems to secure the whole thing a little bit better but I haven’t tested it out at ballet yet.
