Filling The Frame: Up Close And Personal With MM

award

This week’s photography lesson at 5 Minutes For Photography is about filling the frame of your picture. Basically that means trying to make your subject (pet, child, product) fill as much of the picture as possible, leaving less background to distract from the photograph. I tried this tactic today using both my husband’s Nikon D40 and my Canon Powershot (you know, beautiful brownie). I actually had an easier time getting my shots with my Canon, I think because it’s a smaller camera, it seemed easier for me to get close to the subject (MM), even if that wasn’t actually true. It could also be that my husbands lens simply gives a lot more room to work around, even in it’s closest zoom than my own camera? I’m not sure of the technical reasons, but there you have it. First I’ll show you some of the pictures I took with the D40:

I love the crispness of these photos and with a little bit of cropping on my computer, I was able to get my desired effect out of them.

But the pictures to follow, that I took with my Canon (though not quite as crisp), required very little cropping, if any.

I think I already have a tendency to fill as much of the frame as I can (my husband does not – he relies almost solely on the crop function), so I actually had to step back and take a picture to compare what I would have gotten (seen above) and yeah – filling the frame really does look much better.

Per usual, my son had a blast with my little “photography exercise” and I enjoyed flexing my creative muscles for a bit. Did you play along on your blog? Let me know! If not, what are you waiting for? Pick up your camera and join in, then link up at 5 Minutes For Mom!

I absolutely love the photo of your son with his fingers in his mouth. This would be an amazing shot if you kept cropping it. His eyes are fantastic. Try a b&w photo with color…it would be awesome. Thanks for sharing. I invite you to check out mine too!

@ Jen : Um the only reason he wasn’t running in the second pictures was because he was eating. In the first set he was mostly running from me but I took like 50 pictures to get those 9 or something. 😛

Also funny is that that’s peanut butter and jelly – it just looks like pizza because he eats the pieces separately instead of as a sandwich because he’s weiiiiird…

MM is such a great, cooperative model. Mine would all run from me. My fave is the last one where he’s biting his pizza and giving you that “enough already” look.
