New Fall TV: The Cyber Cutting Board

Now that we’ve all had a fair chance to catch most of the new Fall tv shows that interest us, the networks have to decide which shows they are keeping and which they are killing. Sarah @ Star Pulse gives her opinion on which shows should stay, and which should go. Since I’m not even remotely qualified to give an expert opinion on, well, anything, I figured it was my bloggy duty to throw in my two cents anyway. So below, sorted by Network, are the new Fall tv shows, Sarah’s opinion and then mine.

ABC

  • FlashForwardSarah says: Keep it because “ABC took a gamble on this show, and we are hoping it pays off. It definitely caters to a cult following by its use of Lost-related references. We hope it is a closet ‘Lost’ sequel or spin-off.”

I say: Apparently I really am the only person who still hasn’t seen this show. I say keep it, if for no other reason than eventually I’m probably going to check it out, maybe?

  • Modern FamilySarah says: Kill it because “Apparently, due to the success of The Office, comedies that are not the standard three-camera format think that they have to be pseudo-documentaries to be successful. Between poor writing and its decision to construct humor via vomiting over used stereotypes, this show needs a replacement.”

I say: I do agree the camera angles are  bothersome at best but something about the show keeps me coming back for more. Also I love Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Mitchell) and would be sad to see yet another of his shows get the ax. Also – Al Bundy in a track suit. That said, I won’t be surprised if this one doesn’t make it.

  • The ForgottenSarah Says: Kill it because “Christian Slater has become a grim reaper of television. The premise is also weak. Stop trying to spin the crime drama – that is poor imagination, not “original programming.””

I say: shut up I’m loving this show. My husband totally agrees with Sarah by the way, but the whole premise of this show is my favorite not at all weak thing about it. We’re just going to have to agree to disagree Sarah.

  • Hank Sarah says: Kill it because “We love Kelsey Grammer, but even the great Crane cannot work his magic on this failure. The only thing it manages to do is highlight a narrative recession in the comedy genre.”

I say: … I’m sorry, I don’t care. I actually didn’t even know this was a show. I’m not really a fan of Kelsey Grammer (so sue me) and really have no opinion on this show at all.

  • The MiddleSarah says: Kill it because “We want to know why, after Back to You epically flopped, ABC decided to give Patricia Heaton and Kelsey Grammer their own shows. Sure, they are good (him more than her), but all ABC did was manage to put them in the loser category again.”

I say: Again, Sarah, I just have to disagree. This may not be the best show ever, but I am loving it. In a strange bizarre and totally over the top way, this is a show I can relate to. And I now love repeating myself in a whisper a la Brick.

  • Cougar TownSarah says: Keep it because “We hate it, but the audiences seem to love it. Well, at least, comparatively, it is far better than Courteney Cox‘sDirt.”

I say: Sarah, if you were going to throw me a bone for a show you don’t even like, you could at least have made it The Middle. Cougar Town is currently the show on my DVR list that I’m half tempted to go ahead and delete, but I keep going back to watch justonemore because of Courtney and her son who I loved in Aliens in America.

I say: that I did not know about the book or the movie (but now I must find them immediately) but I am loving this show. It’s one of my favorites of the new fall lineup.

CBS

  • The Good WifeSarah says: Keep it because “This could not come at a more relevant time and it is well cast.”

I say: I’m not really sure what you’re talking about, but I do enjoy this show, especially since Logan is in the show and I can go ahead and continue to dislike him just like I did in Gilmore Girls. Also – Grams is in this one. Also – BIG. Also – Bryan from Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead – Also – yeah I love it.

  • NCIS: Los AngelesSarah says: Keep it because “Not nearly as good as its older brother; but it seems to pull ratings.”

I say: Again, I might be asking for some hate mail, but I’ve never seen any of these NCIS shows. Sometimes I think I might want to go check them out since people seem to love them, but then I look at my current DVR list waiting to be watched and change my mind.

  • Three RiversSarah says: Kill it because “Enough with the sub-par medical dramas! Pretty soon we are going to see a medical show that centers around medical waste custodians.”

I say: What’s Three Rivers? Never mind, I don’t care.

  • Accidentally on PurposeSarah says: Kill it because “The show was accidentally greenlit – or at least that what we believe.”

I say: the only reason I’m still watching this show is because nothing better is on and it comes on between How I Met Your Mother and Lie to Me.

CW

  • Melrose Place – Kill it because “We cannot say enough negative things about this show. In fact, we despise it so much that we would rather sit and watch a marathon of Two And A Half Men (ick, ick, ick).”

I say: I don’t think I’d watch this show unless you paid me (sorry but I do like money).

  • The Beautiful LifeSarah says: Dead on Arrival because…. Well, the network did it for us…

I say: Who cares?

  • Vampire Diaries Sarah says: Keep it because “Cheesy and stereotypical, but a much better based-on-a-book-series attempt than Twilight. Oh, and there is the fact that the book series was written a decade before “Twilight,” so those of you who think it is a rip-off-think again.”

I say: the fact that this book series was written before Twilight is actually pretty heartening and I’m enjoying the show a lot. It’s my little nap time indulgence these days because my very manly husband doesn’t care for it.

FOX

  • GleeSarah says: Keep it because “No, “keep it” is not nearly as strong of a reaction. Please feel free to go forth and do whatever you wish, Fox. As long as Kurt and Sue keep us laughing so hard we spittake and the dialogue remains deliciously dark for a Fox network show, we will just keep begging for more. Oh, and thanks ahead of time for the upcoming Joss Whedon guest-direct episode.”

I say: If they don’t keep it, I will murder Fox network. Seriously. (Well not really, but I’ll be super angry like not since Veronica Mars angry.

  • Brothers Sarah says: Kill it because “We would like to bet on this show not making it past a full first season.”

I say: What’s Brothers?

NBC

I say: never heard of it, but I’d give it a chance.

  • The Jay Leno Show Sarah says: Kill it because “Aside from wrecking television as we know it, Jay Leno is destroying his reputation. Soon people will realize that he is grasping for guests since smart rival networks are avoiding having their stars appear on the show due to conflict of interest.”

I say: I don’t really care either way.

  • Trauma and Mercy – Sarah says: Kill them both! because “NBC is clearly pining for the golden days of ‘ER’. Sorry, NBC, but separate shows focused on paramedics and nurses respectively are falling down the same waterfall as “Three Rivers.””

I say: whatevs. Grey’s Anatomy is the only medical drama for me.

What do you think?

I like “Vampire Diaries”, especially since “True Blood” is on hiatus for the season!
I loved Dawson’s Creek which was by Williamson…I guess I miss high school? (not!)

I was soooo waiting for someone to do this! I kept thinking that you would sooner or later & I’m so glad you did.

I LOVE Vampire Diaries, The Middle (seriously, how can you not love a show where mom comes home w/ takeout & says that she’s cooked & we’ll all eat together like a normal family! In front of the tv no less!!! What’s not to love about that?), Trauma more than Mercy but I watch them both, I’ve relegated Grey’s to computer watching however still loving it. I’m enjoying Eastwick (love all that the one chick does to her looser husband) & the forgotten is great. I love that anyone can help solve a murder. Just the thought that someone who is forgotten can be found & have a name & possibly a family again? Amazing.

Flashforward has been great too. Gonna need it once Lost is done. Still watching the wives of abc although not the siblings. Hank & Accidently on purpose need to just be cut. The sad thing is that I truly love Kelsy Grammer & Jenna Elfman. OH & don’t forget the Dollhouse & Stargate Universe. Both of those are wonderful too! There. I know there’s more but…..

I think this season we are watching the least amount of new shows ever. We are enjoying Flash Forward and had to kill Cougar Town. One new show – ONE! Plus we killed House and CSI. Actually we killed CSI when Grissom left. I just didn’t have the energy this season to get into new shows, only to have the best ones canceled. Sigh.

    I am so clueless!

Grey’s – watch it, can’t stop (even if they have tried to revive a deer)

Brothers and Sisters – just plain love this show, don’t even know why really.

That’s all I got. Seriously. Those are the only shows I watch.

    See? Clueless 🙂

I really have to say that I’m in AWE of you guys t.v. watching ability. I’ve probably seen 3 of the new shows listed once. I don’t know what it is, but I just can’t seem to follow any kind of show that has a storyline of any kind. I blame my ADD…really.

I’ve been watching Glee, Vampire Diaries, Cougar Town, Eastwick, Bones, House, The Big Bang Theory, Ghost Whisperer, Dollhouse, The Forgotten, Make It Or Break It, Psych, Fringe, Eureka, Ugly Betty, Gossip Girl, and Castle.

That’s about 16 hours of TV a week…though a few of them have staggered seasons, so I probably average 10 hrs per week. I guess that’s not terrible
