I cut all my hair off this weekend… but I’m not sure I cut enough off.
See, when I decided to go short, I initially wanted to do a super short pixie cut – you know, go for broke. My husband surprised me by being totally on board – which made me want to do it even more. There’s something thrilling about the idea of going that short and I sort of feel like I could pull it off, and let’s be honest, not everyone can.
But the stylist at the salon seemed apprehensive about a pixie cut for my face shape (or maybe because I’m slightly over weight? It’s a hunch I had but she obviously didn’t say so, but let’s try and think of a plus sized woman sporting a pixie cut? Do many come to mind that we like? I’m not sure. I’m also not sure how much longer I can truly call myself plus sized as I am continuing to lose weight and am currently below my pre-first baby weight) and in the end, I left with a stacked bob.

I’m not saying I don’t like it. She did a pretty good job and I get that the long layers frame my face, blah blah blah. Here’s the thing: I’ve had this hair cut before. I know it suits me, but I wanted to do something new. Something daring. I seem to have challenged myself to the task of going shorter and in my mind, I chickened out. But… maybe the professionals are right? She told me if I wanted to go in for the full pixie, I could come back within the next week and she’d take care of it – and now I am in deciding mode.
A lot of people I’ve asked online have been Team Pixie and I’m highly considering it, or at least something sort of pixie-ish. Here’s a little collage of what I have in mind that I think is realistic with my hair type:

Basically – Katie Holmes’s shortest haircut to date. I could be wrong, but I think Katie and I have similar hair. When her’s gets longer it seems to need a lot of styling to keep it from looking like, well my hair. My hair is unruly, and sometimes when it’s in this bob length, it needs a lot of fussing and constant supervision and then it still does whatever the eff it wants. That sleek chin-pointing thingy that it does at the tips? It doesn’t do that on command, it’s kind of a leaving it up to chance thing. And I spend most of the day with those layers tucked behind my ears anyway.
What I really want is to cut it all off. I thought about going even shorter and I’m not opposed to it, but I think this style above is what I want. Still a bit of length to fuss with but short enough to be truly short. If I went shorter, I could probably do it myself with my husband’s hair clippers, but the length I want, I might be better off having a stylist do.
What do you think? Shorter or keep it? And if shorter, should I do it myself or maybe have a savvy friend or spouse lend a hand – or go back to the stylist who didn’t want to do it in the first place but still says she’ll do it anyway if I want her to? Can I rock the Katie?

I say go for it! I don’t think I could do it with my crazy frizzy hair, but I want to! It’s constantly up anyways, so why not go for super easy?

You have the confidence to do it & basically that’s what’s required. Plus, you look great w/ the cut you have now & a pixie is a similar (albeit much shorter type of cut) & lastly? You Want to do it! I say go for it! You’ll look great!!!

Oh hey, I may not know you so well, but personally I’d go for the Katie Holmes sassy look! You’d look absolutely adorable, and it’s hardly know work at all (I love that part ~hehe~). Have a great day!

I think you look fantastic with the new style. It really suits the shape of your face and you can really see that you have lost weight. I am not keen on the Pixie look myself, so I probably wouldn’t reccommend to anyone.

Ok I’m jealous cause now I want to rock a Katie Holmes cut too…being a bob girl forever also and my hubs doesn’t really dig the bob anymore. I think you would look fab that cut and don’t see why the stylist was apprehensive. I’m actually going to show the hubs Katie’s cut and see what he thinks for it for me…if you don’t mind. 🙂

@ Nancy : lmao that is really funny. I don’t dislike the cut I have now necessarily – it’s the haircut I had when I first started dating my husband actually – but it’s like, I’ve been there and done that and just getting a nice haircut wasn’t really what this is about. I’m going for broke!

When I last got my hair cut the stylist was really apprehensive of cutting as much as I asked for, but in the end, it’s exactly what I wanted. I think they’re gunshy of making drastic changes.
I think you should go for the pixie. Honestly the way it is now, it looks like it needs something more in the front. It looks good, but like it wants to be a pixie. 🙂
BTW, my husband pointed out a hair cut like yours on a woman while we were on vacation and said “don’t EVER do that to your hair.” Heh. Guess he’s not a fan of the stacked bob.

@ Amanda : EXACTLY! I told the stylist, “I’m not concerned that you will cut it too short – hair grows.” But she still seemed apprehensive – I think SHE’S afraid of short hair – lol
I really think I’m going to do it, it’s just a matter of where and when at this point. And you know I’ll take pictures. And I was thinking about how it’s always tucked behind my ears or in a pony tail and was like, “so what’s the point of keeping it any longer than what everyone always sees?”

so, this might be the deciding factor for you:
Ever since I’ve known you, you’ve been wearing your hair up or behind your ears…which means the pixie is totally a cut for you.
My hair dresser mentioned it to me the last time I went in, and I was all like – thanks, but I’ll stick with the Reese Witherspoon in Sweet Home Alabama look. So, she went shorter than I expected, but not pixie….and everyone says it looks gorgeous. IF you do it, take pictures. Maybe I’ll be inspired 😉
plus, you know as well as anyone – hair grows.
