Yesterday the kids and I went to MM’s elementary school to officially enroll him in kindergarten. This is apparently different from when we “registered” him in March. Even MM was confused by this. “Didn’t we already do this?”
The kindergarten enrollment process really does feel like the song that never ends. But even though it was a lot of filling out practically the same paperwork all over again, this time did come with some fun “This is actually happening” stuff.
Like finding out where his classroom will be – and meeting his teachers. Well, we met his teachers because I decided to check out the classroom while we were there – and all three teachers were actually there setting up furniture, decorating, etc. I got stellar vibes from all three teachers – kindergarten teachers really do seem to be a special breed of awesome. Like they were born with exactly the right amount of pep, patience and cleverness to handle a classroom of 5 year olds and their even more nervous and anxious mommies.
They seemed thrilled to meet MM who was of course thrilled to meet them, too. He’d start kindergarten tomorrow if he could. Yesterday would have been even better. He is so smart and surprising me every day with his amazing memory and comprehension. Somehow in the past year or months he has memorized our address and phone number. He can count to 100 with assistance and can read and write his name and his sisters, mommy, daddy, grammy, etc. etc.
I really think he is going to flourish beautifully in kindergarten – I think he’ll love being a schoolboy and making all those new friends! I am definitely looking forward to this new chapter in our lives – the new friends, the birthday parties, the homework. The good and the bad! And I’m looking forward to the alone time I’ll be getting with BB, something she’s never really had before…

My little lady is growing up more and more every day and has a lot of new tricks up her sleeve. She can count to three and loves repeating everything she hears, for better or worse. She is in love with her little monkey purse that holds a package of wipes and a spare diaper for when we’re out and about. She loves being mommy’s little helper and I’m looking forward to lots of Mommy & BB days together this fall, just the two of us.
It brings back memories to when MM was her age and it was just me and him. We were just starting to think about adding to our little family and now look at us – in a new state, in our first home, with two kids – one about to start kindergarten and the other just starting to fill to the brim with curiosity, learning new things every day and growing into a child where a baby used to be.
Two kids growing up and one sad / happy mommy trying to keep up! And thankfully a clever, caring husband who’s always around to center me and be my rock and make me coffee when I complain for the 8 millionth time that morning that school starts way too early! (Seriously MM has to be at the bus stop before 7:18am!)
Thank god for coffee and handsome husbands!
