It’s time for another Aloha Friday, the day that you take it easy and look forward to the weekend, in Hawaii and blog land anyway. As you should know by now, over at An Island Life, Kailani decided that on Fridays she would take it easy on posting and ask a simple question for you to answer. Nothing that requires a lengthy response.
If you’d like to participate, just post your own question on your blog and leave your link at An Island Life’s blog. Don’t forget to visit the other participants! It’s a great way to make new bloggy friends!
I’ve been seeing the photo mentioned in this article all over the internet the past couple days. Glamour ran it in their September issue and it has received a lot of positive feedback and some negative, too. Mainly what’s up for debate seems to be the idea of “fat” – what is considered fat and what isn’t? Is she’s fat? Am I? How will society as a whole view this image and what does that say about us? Personally I think the model is in great shape – plus sized? Not so much. I really can’t imagine anyone thinking that woman is fat, but apparently they are out there. This article at MOMformation confirms that and baffles me. What do you think?
- Is the model fat or over weight?
- Is society’s idea of healthy healthy?
- How does the photo make you feel about yourself?
- Any other (tactful) comments also welcomed.

What is and is not overweight is so broad. We are each built differently. There are times I can wear a size 6 and other times I wear a size 10. Am I big sometimes and small the other times? Also, as we age our bodies change. I could go on and on but I’ll stop here LOL.

I don’t think she is fat or plus size. However magazines all over don’t put women with that body type on the cover. Oh wait, Oprah can and does!

I think she is gorgeous and not the least bit fat!

She is gorgeous. I love the fact that she was comfortable enough in her own skin to pose for the photo. My stomach is very similar (dimply, stretch marks, not toned at all), and sadly I can’t say that I would ever do the same thing. And that makes me disappointed in myself.
To answer the question…no, I do not find her fat. She is normal and healthy and beautiful. I wish there were more photos like this in magazines.

I just saw that photo for the first time the other day. I think it’s great, but wouldn’t consider her plus-sized at all…unless you were saying plus-sized compared to the average size 00 model. That pic made me feel better about myself 🙂

The model looks awesome! It’s about time magazines realized that a healthy woman has to have a little bit to her. Being so skinny that the ribs show the complete curvature is not healthy & certainly not attractive. That woman in the pix is gorgeous. I love that she did that & that the magazine published that photo. Absolutely beautiful.

I think the model looks great. We’ve begun to define healthy as “very thin,” I think in an effort to get away from overeating (we have so much food available that it can be a challenge to have self-control). But I think “healthy” means you eat a balanced diet, make time to exercise daily – whether by walking, doing Wii Fit, going to the gym, etc. – and feel comfortable with your body. I love the picture. I’ve been thin my whole life (genetics, more than anything), and after my first baby it’s been difficult to get back to the shape I was before – but the picture sends a message that it’s ok to not have an absolutely flat stomach or a flawless shape. We ARE flawed, but that isn’t bad!

If that’s fat than I’m obese! I think she looks great and if they showed more normal looking woman like that a lot of women would feel more comfortable in their own skin.

Not fat, healthy! Super models aren’t healthy – they are under nourished & damaging their bodies. Society needs to embrace a healthy personification of what it means to be a woman.

No, she is not fat. She looks like a healthy woman. Fashion models are not healthy, most of them are underweight somuch they don’t get their periods. It is time for media to show women the way they really are instead force feeding us unattainable ideals.

Doesn’t everybody’s tummy do that a little bit if you lean forward no matter how skinny you are?
What I hope is that this is a step in the right direction and not just a brilliant marketing ploy from Glamour to sell magazines.

I love that photo! I think she looks fabulous and happy, and think about it honestly, it wuld be hard to make ANY stomach look totally flat sitting in that position, don’t you think. She’s not fat at all, and anyone who thinks she is has some serious body image issues!
