Aloha Friday: Why NOT To Install a Windmill in Your Front Yard or….

Last night on Bones they solved a case that happened in a quaint little Desperate Housewives-esque cul-de-sac. So you know there were perfectly manicured lawns, overly manicured wives and teenage daughters – and murder. My husband commented, “Wow that kind of makes you not want to move into one of those cul-de-sacs, huh?” And I was like, “Honestly, take out the murder bit and that still looks like fun to me.” I mean seriously, sure a guy was killed but they did find the body in the middle of their annual neighborhood luau. Complete with coconuts. I don’t like murder as much as the next non-homicidal person but I’d still rather live in a pretty house in a cute little cul-de-sac than a 3rd floor apartment whose community playground was used as a bonfire this summer.

Annnnyway, just curious:

What kind of neighborhood do you live in?

What kind of neighborhood would you like to live in?

We live on a street and don’t really see our neighbours as everyone parks their cars behind their houses by their garages. I have been here six years and I couldn’t tell you who lived opposite me. It is a bit like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, you never see anyone going in or anyone coming out!

We live in an older neighborhood. Our house was built in the 50s. Our neighbors are a good mix of older and younger people. It is definitely not my ideal neighborhood. I would like to live on a cul-de-sac with the houses more spread apart. I don’t like being so close to my neighbors. At the same time, I wouldn’t want to live anywhere too rural because that would be creepy. We are probably going to start looking to move in the next couple of years so we can be in a better school district for middle/high school.

We just moved to Colorado, and we live in a nice little cul-de-sac where most of the people are really very friendly. I like it here. I just wish my (two) friends from AZ were here too. Not having any close friends kinda sucks.

I live in a nice non-murderous little neighborhood!

I’d like to live on an estate with nary a neighbor in sight…

We live in what I consider an ideal setting, although it’s not a desperate housewives type of neighborhood. We live in the suburbs, right in the downtown area of a smaller “commuter” town. 99% of the houses are older, circa 1900-1950, originally built on 1 acre lots. Over the years as laws have changed those lots have been subdivided. And we live in a house we built in 2005 on a third of an acre that’s a on a flag lot (behind one of the older houses). I love it that we’re off the main drag, yet close enough to walk to the post office and a few other places. Our neighbors are awesome (there are 4 houses off of our easement, so sort of like a cul-de-sac) which makes it all the sweeter.

We live in an older, more established neighborhood, and our son is the youngest and only one of three total kids in the court. It doesn’t bother me living here, it’s nice and quiet actually!

We live in a typical suburban neighborhood of the late 90’s. Almost all of the homes have white porch rails in front, giving the neighborhood a homey (though almost cookie-cutter) feel. The houses were all built on the front part of smallish lots, so the front yards are small but the back yards are quite large. There’s a grass strip between the sidewalks and streets, and large maple trees planted in the strip every 25 feet or so, making the streets pretty even though they’re narrow. We frequently have block parties, and kids are constantly playing in the streets. The neighborhood is by no means idyllic, and yards are NOT perfectly manicured, nor are the residents. 🙂 But we love it anyway. One neighbor is a total jackass, but otherwise people seem to get along pretty well. I grew up in a neighborhood similar to this one and I’m glad to be raising my kids in a place like this.

I love my neighborhood (it helps that I grew up here)! I for the most part know or am accuainted with most of my neigbhors, which I think is important and something I didn’t get in cookie cutter house neighborhood surbia. I’m not sure if it was just our street, but no one seemed overly open and friendly except one neighbor. I almost felt like an intruder.
I do miss not having sidewalks, parks, and swimming pools with in walking distance in the suburbia neighborhood though. However, there’s no housing association fees and rules here so I don’t have to stress over the grass being a touch to long and be fined for it.

    Give me that cul-de-sac too!

I live in the boondocks where everyone is on 1 acre lots & up. Actually, ours is the smallest @ 1.25 acres. Most of our neighbors are on 6 & up. Oh & practically everyone is retired or they don’t have kids. So no one really socializes w/ each other. Kinda sucks.

I live in a two street neighborhood, they’re parallel to each other and connected by the parking lot of an elementary school. It’s a very quiet neighborhood but I love hearing the school children’s chatter when they’re outside playing.

We live in a small suburban area in a small town with lots of little twin homes like ours. I would love to live in New Harmony which is where we lived when we first got married, it’s a SMALLER town with no stores just a gas station BUT everyone knew everyone and everyone was so much more friendly. and it was 20min closer to the real city that I crave.
