Aloha Friday: Kitchen Talk

I’ve been reading this fantastic book called Eating for Beginners by Melanie Rehak. It’s what I wanted The Omnivore’s Dilemma to be and then some. Speculation and information on the food industry, organic and local food and why they matter, tales of her experiences working in a restaurant kitchen and helping out local farms and cooking with her family and cooking for her picky toddler. It manages to be so utterly relateable and also shares stories of experiences most of us have never had, but from the perspective of someone just like us.

I’ll refrain from writing my real review here (so tempting as I have so much to say already and I’m only halfway through!) and get on to my question for the day. Anyway, last night I was reading about her attempt to cook this really complicated lobster recipe with some friends and her husband and the descriptions of the procedure sounded daunting but also kind of fun.

I don’t know that I want to tackle a recipe that complicated yet but it did get me to thinking I’d like to start cooking more real food – spend some more time with natural, basic ingredients and be a bit more adventurous in the kitchen. I’d love to be one of those people who doesn’t even need a recipe – who can just reach into the fridge and grab a handful of things and just whip something up.

So my Aloha Friday question(s)  is/are:

What kind of a cook are you?

Do you make complicated recipes or cook from the box?

What kind of cook would you like to be?

What’s your favorite recipe to cook? What recipe are you dying to try?

What kind of a cook are you? I guess I go with the flow mostly and improvise when need be. I’m willing to try new things and new ways of combining foods together.

Do you make complicated recipes or cook from the box? I cook from scratch and from the box, depends on the night. I think the only thing I’ve ever done that’s complicated was mt dad’s Swedish Rum Cheesecake- both time consuming and needs to be just right. (remember how that turned out?? WAY too rummy.)

What kind of cook would you like to be? I am the cook I want to be willing to do what needs to be done to get a meal on the table.

What’s your favorite recipe to cook? What recipe are you dying to try?
My favorite recipie is one I actually threw together one day. I opened the freezer and fridge and saw chicken, spinach, feta cheese and tomatos- I had some greek seasoning and the result was a huge hit that is a big favorite- Greek Chicken Bake. It’s super easyt oo and can even be made with wiliting spinach. Just chop up the spinach, throw in some feta and dice the tomatos, mix all of that and throwit on top of chicken sprinkled with greek seasoning (from Cavanders) and bake. It’s flavorful and delicious. I usually serve it with chicken falvored rice (from box)

I am a some of this & some of that type cook w/ recipes I feel comfortable w/. Not too bad about making up my own either. My favorite recipes are deserts though. Especially easy ones that have a little something to punch them up. Like making candied almonds (easier than you’d think if you’ve never made them before) or candied orange peel (almost as easy!)

Lately hubby does all the cooking, but when I cook it’s a through it together thing. No measuring. Just taste to see it it’s edible.

I don’t really cook either. I want to be a good cook, but I’m just not. I’m not creative at all and have to follow a recipe to the letter. I don’t mind using fresh ingredients rather than from a box, as long as something’s not too complicated. Like, we got rhubarb in our CSA share, and we’re having some people over next weekend so I want to make strawberry rhubarb pie. I found a few recipes and pretty much picked the least complicated one with ingredients we already have.
