Aloha Friday: Warm Weather Dinners

It looks like warm weather is finally back here in Wisconsin – hopefully to stay this time! Days like this though, I loathe being in the kitchen, especially come dinner time.

So my Aloha Friday question today is:

What’s your favorite go-to meal on a hot day?

Aloha Friday @ An Island LifeAloha Friday is a weekly blogging carnival hosted by Kailani @ An Island Life. Following the Hawaiian tradition to take it easy on Fridays, she posts a simple question on her blog for everyone to answer and encourages everyone to do the same thing on their blogs. It’s a great way to make new bloggy friends!

Aloha Friday: I Think I'll Go For a Walk Outside Now…

bundled up for a walk with daddy

This week we’ve started a habit of walking every night after dinner as a family. If the weather is good, we’re doing a mile and a half, bad weather, just a half mile. This used to be normal, we used to walk farther, but the weather grew colder, we grew lazier and we fell out of habit. And I fell into weight gain again. Not good.

I’m not proud to admit that I’ve gone kicking and screaming back into this routine. Most nights I whine and grumble all the way out the door. But by the time we get back, I’m always glad we went and I’m lucky that my husband has put his foot down and dedicated his nights to this and encouraging me to keep going. He’s a keeper. And I know it will only get easier, especially as the weather gets better. I look forward to walking in warmer temperatures and eventually longer days so it won’t be dark by the time we get out.

I’ve tried a lot of different work outs, I dabble in different things, but walking has always been my favorite choice – the most natural, the easiest and most relaxing.

So my Aloha Friday question this week is:

What is your favorite way to exercise?

Aloha Friday: Coloring Corner

We recently got our (almost 5 year old) son, MM, a really awesome set of crayons. I wanted something with a plastic case instead of cardboard so it would hold up better, and it had to be Crayola – I think we can all agree, this is a must – and I have to say I’m pretty thrilled with what we got.

pick a color, any color!

He’s been in coloring heaven ever since, loving his beautiful new crayons in every color he can imagine.

So my Aloha Friday question this week is:

What is your favorite color?

Aloha: Waistline

Aloha, bloggers!

So, lately I’ve been thinking about that dirty of dirtiest words… you know that one that starts with a D and ends with an IET. I hate that word. But as my waistline is not getting any smaller these days – and in fact seems intent on getting maybe just a little bit bigger – it’s becoming clearer to me by the day that pretty soon I’m gonna need to start doing something about it.

What makes this harder, is that I *know* what to do. I’ve successfully and healthfully lost weight in the past, not even all that long ago, while pregnant with Little BB no less! Remember those rocking days when I counted calories all through my second pregnancy and maintained my weight for 9 months while disbelieving nurses made disbelieving faces at me? And then I lost 30 pounds after she was born and another 10 pounds while breastfeeding? And it was glorious?

Well, then I stopped breastfeeding and slowwwwwwly gained back twenty pounds. Really. I know, it makes me sad, too. Apparently I’m having a really hard time accepting the fact that I can’t eat 2,000 calories a day anymore. And the number that the experts are recommending, 1500 calories. It makes me sad. And pouty. And I don’t like it. And I don’t really feel like exercising regularly either. Apparently knowing what to do and wanting to do it are two different things. Huh.

So my Aloha Friday question this week is:

What do you do to motivate yourself to eat healthy and exercise even when you don’t want to and it’s cold outside and chocolate tastes good?

Aloha: Get Me Outta Here

healthiest looking sick kids everrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

It’s Friday again bloggy buddies! I don’t know about you, but this week has just craaaaaawled for me, mostly because we haven’t left the apartment all.freaking.week. See, my kiddos have had this persistent cough since like the beginning of time (okay MM has had it for 2 weeks, little BB about 1 week) and every time I’ve taken them out, I end up regretting it.

I keep going back and forth on whether or not I think they are actually sick because it’s one of those annoying They Seem Perfectly Happy and Healthy All Day if you ignore the COUGH HACK SPLURT every twenty minutes or so kind of sicknesses. Okay I’m exaggerating on the hacking and splurting, cause it’s more of a dry cough, but I thought the extra descriptions make my situation seem more dire and worthy of your sympathy.

But then every time last week that I said, “Screw it, these kids aren’t even sick and I’m BORED!” and took them out, they immediately set to work coughing on everyone in sight and making me feel all guilty germy neglectful mommy, so inside this week we stayed and it’s suuuuuucked.

So this combined with other hormonal elements and typical mischievous toddler and bored out of his skull preschooler antics have made it kind of a stressful, banging on the doors begging for mercy kind of weeks. By the end of the week, basically all of the toys have been taken away, leaving BB with like one lone block and MM his coloring supplies and seriously, yeah that’s about it (okay fine, I didn’t take BB’s baby dolls away and the giant toy kitchen is still in the living room because there’s no room left in our bedroom, but there aren’t any toy foods or plates or silverware or anything, not even the fine toy china, people, I went ballistic!)…

Hmmm… what was my point again? Oh right, I’m bored. And cold. And suffering a bit of cabin fever…

So my Aloha Friday question this week is:

If you could be anywhere but here today, where would you be?

Aloha Friday: Happy Christmas Eve / Birthday to Me!

It’s a very special day today for two reasons. The first being obvious – it’s Christmas Eve. There will likely be cookie baking and Christmas Eve Pajamas opening and maybe a drive through town to look at the lights. I am so excited about Christmas morning this year, and I know my 4 1/2 year old is probably even more excited and he doesn’t even know about all the awesome stuff he’s getting!

It’s also a special day because it’s my birthday! 28 years ago today my parents got the world’s coolest Christmas present a day early. People all across the world were singing carols of joy and I like to think it was partly because they knew I had been born and that eventually I’d go on to write this blog and make a difference in the lives of five readers everywhere. I’d fill hearts across the country with laughter and pictures of cute kids and smug feelings of, “Jeez, if this girl can land an amazing husband and two adorable kids, I’m pretty sure I could solve world hunger or something.” Which means I probably sort of cause world peace at some point. No need to thank me, though I do accept cookies, free books and techy swag (I might even review it for you).

So my Aloha Friday question this week is:

What are you doing today to celebrate my birthday (or Christmas Eve if you prefer, but honestly, who are we kidding?)?

Aloha: Santa, Baby

oh christmas tree

I know normally, I like to prattle on about my life and then beg you for advice, recipes ,etc. but I’m going to keep things short and sweet this week (you’re welcome) and just ask you a generic question instead.

So my Aloha Friday question this week is:

What do you want Santa to leave you under the tree this year?

If reality weren’t a factor, what would you really want under the tree?

Aloha: Bundt Cakes

my new bundt pan

One of the many amazing things my MIL is known for is her holiday rum cakes. They are so amazing that people have been known to beg for them annually to the point where she is now responsible for baking a couple dozen each holiday season for all of her loved ones. I’m not exaggerating when I say that she might be Wonder Woman.

Unfortunately, this year she is undergoing treatment for breast cancer, so she has understandably decided to take a year off from this now time-honored tradition. My husband was more than a little distraught at the idea of a rum cake-less Christmas so he did what any booze soaked cake-obsessed man would do and bought me a bundt cake pan then emailed his mommy to please send him her recipe so that I can attempt coming close to that magic for him this year.

I hope I can live up to her glory. Meanwhile, I find myself intrigued with these strange circular pans with fun designs and I’ve been googling bundt cake recipes all morning, planning various culinary experiments to try while I get used to my pretty new pan.

Random google searches are fine and dandy of course, but you know when I really want to get to the heart of a subject and find the best of what’s out there, well, I turn to you bloggy readers of mine – because you’ve always got the goods to deliver.

So my Aloha Friday question this week is:

Do you have a bundt cake recipe that I need to make like right now?

Not into bundts? No biggie! I’d love it if you would share any of your favorite holiday recipes!

Aloha: Europe

My husband’s company is super mega awesome amazing for many reasons but one of my favorite reasons is the 5 year sabbaticals the employees get. Better? If an employee takes a vacation to a country they’ve never been to before, the company helps pay for airfare, etc. Awesome, no? So lately we’ve been daydreaming about a 10 year anniversary trip to Europe in about 5-6 years (our anniversary is in 5 1/2 years roughly). Right now we are looking at Madrid, Paris, Venice and Athens (about 5 days each in two cities and a day or two in the others). We’ve even set up a special savings account to ensure that this can happen, assuming pricing stays somewhat similar.

I puffy heart loooove to travel and Europe is kind of my Big Thing that I really want to see more of so all of this is terribly exciting, and the fact that we have this long to actually save for it makes it actually seem somewhat feasible (and hey worse case scenario is that it doesn’t happen but we have a ton of money set aside for something else like college, retirement, new whatever). But hopefully it does happen because seriously? LOVE.

So my Aloha Friday question this week is:

If you could travel to any European country, where would you most want to go?
