As our second week begins, we’re starting to find our rhythm in this new school year. It took me a little while to get used to the many variables of our schedule – with BB only in school four days a week and for only three hours a day; and her brother having early release one day a week – the alarm clock app on my cell phone is getting a lot of use!
Monday morning felt mostly like business as usual this week. We get big brother on the bus and this time she didn’t complain bitterly about not getting on the bus with him. She knew her time is coming. We had coffee and lingered in our morning, tried to finish the mountain of chores I had piling up and watched a little tv until big brother came home. We’ve got Mondays down.
My handful of free hours each day is a wonderful little blessing that I am starting to get used to. It’s not much but I try to accomplish as much as I can with those hours: cleaning, exercising, running errands, working on projects at home, watching tv and trying to relax a little bit before my littles come home.
The only tricky part has been nap times. She is convinced she doesn’t need them. I beg (BEG) to differ. She has a tendency to pass out around 4pm, right before dinner, which makes the bed time routine a little hard. Which makes waking up at 6am difficult. Okay, maybe I’m the only one complaining about waking up at 6am. My kids are weirdly unperturbed by early mornings. I have no idea where they get that from!
I only panic a little bit when the bus is late. The beginning of the school year seems to equal complete craziness for the bus drivers trying to stick to their schedules wile the kids try to learn their routine. You cannot rush elementary school kids. You can try, but I have found it doesn’t work. I try to remind myself of this while I nervously check and recheck the time on my phone. But despite the complete lack of predictability in the bus schedule these past couple weeks, our amazing bus driver has managed to bring my babies home safe every day and I know he’ll have things running like a well oiled machine soon.
MM brought home a reading log this week where we’ll keep track of how much he reads each night. He only needs to read 15 minutes a night to reach their target weekly goal, but ever the over achiever, he read 30 minutes the last night with ease. I’m looking forward to seeing how many minutes he logs each week!
So, so far so good. How is your school year going?
One response to “finding our new normal.”
It is crazy, isn’t it? My alarm is going off all the time, too!
And 6am, yep, we’ve got two early risers here, too! And, neither will do naps anymore. Thankfully, most of the time, that means they are asleep before 8!
