Weekend Diversions: The Blogiversary Special

In honor of my 1 Year Blogiversary, this week’s Weekend Diversions will all be somewhat blogging themed. They aren’t quite as divertive as usual, but they are cool. And it’s my party, I  can do what I want to.

First order of business is to avoid being productive and see which celebrities are on Twitter now. Some of my favorite celebs to follow are @danecook, @MarthaStewart, @johncmayer, @TheEllenShow and @jimmyfallon. But Blissfully Domestic just did a post listing even more great celebs now on Twitter like: @aplusk (Ashton Kutcher), @MrsKutcher (Demi Moore), @BritneySpears, @MishaBarton, @TheRue (Rumer Willis), @LilyRoseAllen, @JaneFonda, @FranDrescher, @iamdiddy (P. Diddy), @BrodyJenner, @RyanSeacrest, @MCHammer, @ElijahWood, @Jamie_Oliver, @Michael_Phelps, @LukeWilson, @TinaFey, @JimmyKimmel and of course @PerezHilton. That should keep you happily diverted for awhile… When you’re done updating your following list (you are following @mommablogsalot, right?) we’ll continue. ::waits::

Wasn’t that fun? But now you’ve been sitting on your arse twittering for god knows how long, eating god knows how many delicious snacks (I’m drooling just imagining it, and I have a very good imagination when it comes to snacks). Time to burn some of those blogging calories with the ProBlogger’s 10 Ways To Get Fit While Blogging. I’ll give you a sampling to get you started, but then you’ll have to click that link for the rest:

1. Cyber Squats – Who says you have to sit when you’re online? Set your chair aside for a few minutes and instead do squats as you write your next blog post, comment, or when you cruise around the Web. I’m squatting as I write this post – ouch!

2. RSS Raises – As you’re sitting at your desk, straighten your knees and lift your legs out in front of you. Do this as you catch up on your favorite blogs on your RSS reader.”

Alright now that you’re feeling toned and fabulous and probably thinking about jumping on Twitter to see if @johncmayer has updated recently, let me entice you with… money. Yeah it’s a low blow I know, but seriously the ProBlogger is at it again with New Blogger Jobs Available. So now you can call all this bloggy diversion the most worthwhile activity you engage in, because when you aren’t being entertained or sharpening your writing skills, you’re getting in a stellar workout and making money, too! So be sure you check out that article, too before moving on to my last diversion which sounds suspiciously like work except with a huge payoff…

Another gem from Blissfully Domestic this week: Free College Tuition (if they’re willing to work for it). How cool is this? Apparently the new campus trend is offering students free tuition and/or room and board in exchange for their manual labor. Sound too good to be true? I was actually very impressed with the deals they were offering – things like working 10, 20 hours a week will get your kids free tuition in some of these schools and one college of engineering is simply offering free tuition to it’s students. Seriously. I know you’re checking that article out right now for links to your kid’s future college dreams. Your welcome.

That’s actually all for this week – sorry no funny videos (try YouTube) or games (okay there is this one) but I’m suspecting this was worth your time anyway. Stay tuned for more blogiversary celebrations, coming to an RSS feeder near you…

Do You Think I Can Get Another Birthday Cake Out Of This?

Remember when I forgot how old I was? There I was, doing my body test on WiiFit when all of a sudden, like a ton of bricks fell on me all of a sudden, I was twenty six. Not twenty five. I can no longer think of myself as “only a quarter of a century old” – I’m older than that – twenty six. I like spelling it out like that instead of typing 26 because it makes it look more important, more graceful and mature – you know, nothing like me whatsoever. Anyway, since that day, after my birthday cake induced sugar coma wore off, I kept having this nagging feeling in the back of my mind… I was forgetting something else. Something way more important than celebrating your birthday twice in two months.

Tomorrow is my first blogiversary! As of tomorrow I’ll be one of those seasoned, “I’ve been blogging for a year,” people. As of Saturday I can say, “I’ve been blogging for over a year now…” And if I hadn’t just now gone ripping through my archives in a panic, I might have missed my own blogiversary (I missed Every Other Milestone along the way – 100 posts, 500 posts, etc. All of them. No matter how hard I tried to commit it to my memory, it wouldn’t stick and I forgot). One day to spare people. That leaves me one day to orchestrate The Party of the Year. One day to bake myself a digital birthday cake. One day to run to the digital greeting card store and send my blog a virtual birthday card. And what about presents? This is awfully short notice and you know we’re in a recession… the money is a bit tight – even my fake cyber wallet is feeling the strain. And of course it might be way too late now to send out invitations.

So I’m going to make this one of those very intimate affairs, where only the creme de la creme of my blogging circle will be invited. Some nice (alcoholic free for me) wine, cute little zero guilt appetizers and desserts. Probably more wine. We can sit around on our respective comfortable seating arrangements and talk about “when our blogs were young,” the infant years of blogging, staying up all night agonizing over our comment counts, having to google “meme” to figure out what it was, if it was contagious and whether we should worry about exposing our friends to one. We’re so far past that now. We spread memes left and right with abandon, we make our own awards and give those to each other, too. We maybe care a little bit less about comment counts… We’re seasoned blogging professionals, “working hard” every day to bring our blogs up in the very best environment we can, nurturing them and helping them grow. We’re on our game now.

So let’s let loose and celebrate. I hope you’ll come to my little soirée tomorrow and celebrate my entrance into the Big Leagues of 1 Year + Bloggers. Want to know if you’re invited? Man if you’re still reading this post, you are my kind of people and you must come! Gifts aren’t necessary but won’t be looked down upon. BYOB please, and please if you really are drinking during my party (and you should) have a glass for me, too. I’ll be here with my Minute Maid Blueberry Pomegranate juice, pretending it’s wine for all I’m worth.

No need to RSVP. I won’t be making you wear name tags or forcing you sit next to that girl (she won’t even be invited, because you know she’d never read this). Please send all blogiversary cards (like the one below) to: mommablogsalot (at) gmail (dot) com.

Playing Favorites: Top 10 Moments in Mommablogsalot History

Auds @ Barking Mad is giving away a $250 Target Gift Card and all you have to do to be eligible to win is post 5-10 of your favorite posts from your blog. How could I not? Especially since I seem to love my blog like crazy. I found about 20-25 posts that I LOVE (am I a narcissist or what?). But I managed to narrow it down to 10 after long moments of soul searching and these are the results of that search, my 10 favorite posts, ranging from serious to seriously silly, in my opinion, they are the cream of my crop. Or something.

Momma Fiddles With Gimp A Lot

Since I’m all crushing on my blog header right now, I thought I’d make a semi-matching button for the blog. I used my wordpress address for now, cause you know, blah blah blah, but maybe at some point if I get my url redirected and jazz I’ll change it. Either way, this one is here for now:

If you are a button user, feel free to add me to your sidebar!

Here For Now

I’ve decided that the blog server we were using was just too big of a hassle – it seems like my blog was down every day and I just haven’t been happy with the service. And honestly, I don’t feel like my blogging life improved much at all from being self hosted – apart from being able to waste countless hours designing fun layouts, it was about the same – except my stats were actually dropping. For now, it’s just not worth it. Sure I could look for another host, but I stopped caring you know? I just want to blog. I don’t care where it’s hosted. I’m going to have my .com redirected here soon so you’ll still be able to find me in either place and I might do the upgrade to let me do custom CSS but only when I start to really care.

My only real grievance is that I REALLY liked the pretty layout I’d found just a short while ago, but maybe with the custom CSS option I’ll be able to recreate that here? I don’t know. Like I said, as long as I can blog – and you guys can FIND my blog that’s all that matters to me. I’ll be posting a teaser tuesday or something esle of relevance later – maybe I’ll even just blog about my day – wouldn’t that be a novelty? 😛 So yeah, I’m still here, just trying to confuse you all as much as possible. I hope you can all find your way back okay.

A Time For Change

I was getting kind of bored with my old layout and have been toying with the idea of hopping on the double sidebar bandwagon so I went perusing themes and came across this little beauty, then I tooled around in Gimp for awhile and made a new header. I swear I like each header I make better than the one before – someday I might actually be good at this! Anyway, take a look around, enjoy the new layout (while it lasts), and if you have any constructive criticism (you know, something other than, “Boy you suck at life,”) feel free to share and I’ll try not to be offended and take it into consideration. 😛

Oh and if you are coveting this theme, it’s called WhitePlus and was developed by Militaru.
