Aloha Friday: De-Cluttering While We Wait

It’s time for another Aloha Friday, the day that you take it easy and look forward to the weekend, in Hawaii and blog land anyway. As you should know by now, over at An Island Life, Kailani decided that on Fridays she would take it easy on posting and ask a simple question for you to answer. Nothing that requires a lengthy response.

If you’d like to participate, just post your own question on your blog and leave your link at An Island Life’s blog. Don’t forget to visit the other participants! It’s a great way to make new bloggy friends!

This week has been all about… waiting… waiting for answers, waiting for the next step. Ugh. Of course we still don’t know anything and haven’t heard back from Dream Company – if we did I’d have posted some deliriously happy or sad post about the results by now, but who knows, maybe you’ll get that by the end of the day? I’d be happy, regardless of the outcome, just to know one way or another.

Anyway, while we’ve been waiting, another thing we’ve been doing us PURGING – getting rid of stuff – lots of stuff and either dumping it or donating it. We thought about doing a yard sale, but honestly the effort we’d be putting into organizing it just didn’t seem worth it when there are so many charities out there that could use a lot of this stuff. We’ll see if we change our mind. The end result of seeing rooms get lighter and lighter has been remarkably invigorating – I love it – I want to do it like once a month. I probably won’t, but I want to. Sure there have been a few things that I have oh so reluctantly gotten rid of, but so many others that I practically giggled with glee to see them go. Why do we keep these things?

So my Aloha Friday questions for this week are:

  • How often do you “spring clean” your home and / or get rid of old clutter?
  • Have you thrown a yard sale before? Was it a lot of work? Was it worth it in the end? How long did it take you to plan it?
  • Do you donate to charities? Which ones?
  • If you could get rid of one big space taking object in your home today, what would you get rid of first? What has been taking up space in your home and life for too long? Why is it still there?
  • Just for shits and giggles, do you think Dream Company is going to get back to us today? Tomorrow? Will it be a yes or a no? Should I start one of those money pool things?
  • Are you impatiently waiting for something, too? Tell me about it!

Answer what you like, ignore the rest – I know that’s a lot of questions, don’t feel pressured to answer all of them – just pick the ones you actually have answers for and time to write about. 🙂 Have a great weekend!

I love having yard sales! We don’t have a yard, so we usually lug our stuff over to the in-laws’ house. It’s more about getting rid of stuff than making money, so I take whatever offers people give me. Then whatever is left over gets dropped off at the Good Will. 🙂 My Aloha Friday

I believe in the power of the Secret so YES I do think Dream Co will offer your husband the job!!

We do an annual yard sale. I don’t put a ton of effort into it. We just collect our stuff, post a couple of signs on the end of our street and wish for the best. This year we may put out a Craigslist ad too.

At the end of the sale, we take everything that doesn’t sell to Salvation Army. Nothing comes back in the house.

I am in need of a good declutter right now!!

Wow…..so many questions. I’ll do the charities one.

Yes, we donate to charities…..some of our favorites include St Judes Children’s Hospital and Susan G Komen Breast Cancer Foundation (lost my mom to breast cancer).

As our daughter grows we have decided to let her help pick out a charity each month for a donation to teach her how important it is to help others.

    Great questions!

I keep my house clutter free with a weekly fling boogie:

Declutter 15 Minutes a Day – 5 Great Tools That Make it Easy!
    1. The 27-Fling Boogie

We do this assignment as fast as we can. Take a garbage bag and walk through your home and throw away 27 items. Do not stop until you have collected all 27 items. Then close the garbage bag and pitch it. DO NOT LOOK IN IT!!! Just do it.

Next, take an empty box and go through your home collecting 27 items to give away. Suze Orman taught me this in her book, The Courage to be Rich. This will change the energy in your home and bring about good feelings. Every time I do this I feel better and my home is becoming decluttered in the process. As soon as you finish filling the box, take it to the car. You are less tempted to rescue the items.

Rule of thumb: if you have two of any item and you only need one, get rid of the least desirable.

I also sing a wonderful song as I am doing this fun job: “Please Release Me, Let Me Go” as sung from the stuff’s point of view.

from flylady (you can see the rest of the list at her site).

We used to clean & get rid of tons of stuff every 2 – 3 yrs when we moved. Now I just try to go through things once or twice a year.

This waiting for answers is the pits! I think the job is Dan’s & you’ll be heading out of there faster than you think. Please tell me you’ll do mail forwarding!

I have had a garage sale..it depends on how much stuff you have and what kind of stuff you have if it’s actually worth it. My friend and I did ours together, so we had a ton of stuff. It turned out okay. But if you have big ticket items, or a lot of home stuff I think it would be great!

I don’t spring clean very often…and I try to get rid of clutter all the time, but it doesn’t always work. Sometimes things that I want to get rid of, I keep just in case. It’s always just in case with me! LOL

We are throwing a garage sale tomorrow. I’ll let you know how it goes! We normally either 1. Freecycle, 2. eBay, 3. give to my cousin for her garage sales, the proceeds of which by Christmas presents for low-income kids, 4. Sell through the consignment shop or 5. donate to Lupus, who comes right to our door to pick up items. I used to donate clothes to a Vietnam Vets organization but they don’t come to my area. My whole side of the garage is packed with stuff so we will sell what we can and disburse the rest to options 1 through 5 listed above.

I think Dream Company will get back to you today and will be a yes, we love you!

I am waiting to find out if I definitely have a job in Colorado or not! And of course waiting for someone to buy my house. 🙂

1 – Not often enough, but usually before Passover we do a major cleaning session.
2 – Have not done a yard sale before. Contemplating it, but not sure if it is worth the hassel.
3 – Yes, we donate to the American Cancer Society since so many members of my family have had that diagnosis.
4 – Would get rid of the monster desk upstairs. Hubby used that when he worked at home. Have not tossed it since it is so huge and we would need something for the desk top computers to live on anyway.
    5 – I hope you hear something soon 🙂
6 – Yes, I am impatiently waiting for the next week when we go to Disney World. So much to do and so little time before that.

Spring cleaning? What’s that??!? 😉 I’m more of a “wait until it’s so messy your husband can barely stand it” cleaner! I suggest freecycle, because you can get rid of anything you don’t want, and the people who want it come and pick it up. Disabled American Veterans and Salvation Army also do pickups occasionally. Otherwise, I’ve known people to set items on their curb with a sign that says ‘free.’ More often than not, said item is gone by the end of the day! We have an old washer, dryer, and double bed taking up space in our home that I’d love to get rid of, but they belong to the landlord so I don’t think that’s gonna happen.

I am a huge fan a good spring clean! 🙂
Nothing is better thant throwing open all the windows and just cleaning cleaning cleaning! lol
I am not a saver so I am constantly purging our house of things we don’t use. I tackel the kids rooms ever couple of months going through toys and such.
I had a garage sale ONCE it was far to much work and not enough return. Now I ask friends and family if they would like what I am getting rid of if not I usually try to find someone else who is looking for whatever I am getting rid of.
And right now I am actually waiting for my new kitchen and bathroom to finish being installed 🙂

I’m not a big Spring Cleaner..I guess I should but I’m just not.

The hubs and I always make big plans to do a yard sale and then when the weekend begins to arrive we cave and say it would be easier to just dump it all off at Good Will. If it’s “good” stuff we sell it on Ebay.

The big space taking object would be the 1970 Cougar that is rotting in my garage. The hubs thought he was going to fix it up and that has not happened. It’s literally the giant elephant in the room and I hate it as I think my van could really be parked there instead.

I think Dream Company will call on Monday. They seem to have been pretty good about getting back to you within a week…look at me thinking I know all your business. 🙂
You should have a money pool it would be fun!

Right now I’m impatiently waiting for the land lord to come and fix our constantly running toilet, he should be here soon.

    Lots of questions to answer.
I just collect stuff to donate throughout the year. I put them into shopping bags and take to Goodwill. I need lots of deductions. Depends on what we consider to be Spring Cleaning I guess.
