Aloha Friday: Road Tripping

It’s time for another Aloha Friday, the day that you take it easy and look forward to the weekend, in Hawaii and blog land anyway. As you should know by now, over at An Island Life, Kailani decided that on Fridays she would take it easy on posting and ask a simple question for you to answer. Nothing that requires a lengthy response.

If you’d like to participate, just post your own question on your blog and leave your link at An Island Life’s blog. Don’t forget to visit the other participants! It’s a great way to make new bloggy friends!

Our latest little dream right now is to take a 3-4 week RV road trip down Highway 51 (it’s a big thing apparently) in about 5 years when the kids are older and my husband will be up for a 5 week sabbatical from work (that 5 weeks of paid time off is a pretty sweet perk). It runs from Wisconsin (us) to Louisiana (them?) and the nerd in me is drooling in anticipation. But we figure in the meantime we should probably do a few practice trips where the destination is less important than the trip. You know we want the trip to be a good time and not something out of an awful road trip of horrors movie. So…

I’m looking for your best road trip tips, suggestions or stories.

Any RV experience? Anyone here that’s traveled the illustrious Highway 51?

Sorry, living on an island has never given me the opportunity to go on a road trip. Good thing, too, since I get car sick. 🙂

I’ve never done an actual road trip – just travelling back and forth between CA, UT, and NM. Definitely add time to your estimated travel time, and remember that kids have small bladders. Otherwise it’s easy to lose your temper! Good luck!

I have done road trips, but only in a car. And I have never been on Highway 51. I would suggest knowing what touristy attractions you want to stop at ahead of time, so you at least have somewhat of a plan 🙂

We used to do lots of road trips and some RV ones. My memories are sometimes funny….there was a flat tire on the RV and the tread from the tire somehow pulled out all of the electrical wiring…we’re talking power steering, brakes and everything. That took HOURS to fix…and then it seriously happened again on the way home!

My experience on road trips with kids is to add 1 hour for every estimated 4 hours. If you estimate a trip should take 8 hours, it will take 10. Meal breaks with kids take a LOT longer than when it’s 2 adults, unless you have kids who don’t eat like snails.

Make sure to see what you will be passing along the way and make plans to stop and visit some sights to break up the driving.

I am from Louisiana but for the life of me I can’t remember what Highway 51 is and where it runs through there.

Sorry…I’m of no help here. I would LOVE to go on a road trip with my family. Maybe someday.

Lots of road trips here too. Check out books from the library that cover the area in question. Actually check out a book about Wisconsin to see where you’d like to go. We just bought a book yesterday from Costco about day trips in our state. We can hardly wait to get started. OH & it even tells when the best time to visit that particular are is. How sweet is that?!

I think your idea is wonderful. Have fun w/ the smaller trips & the planning.

We’ve done lots of road trips. Plan out the things you want to see. There were some days we only drove 200 miles because there was so much to see and other days it was easy to cover 500 miles.

I’ve never done a road trip in my entire life. I have never been in an RV either. I think it would be a lot of fun though.
