I’m ready to be a Fit Mom For Life.

I know normal people tend to make major health resolutions in January (and then bail on them 6 weeks later) and that starting a diet in December of all months might be foolish ; but my bathroom scale said some pretty mean things to me last night (again) and I’m starting to realize how drastically I need to make some changes to my lifestyle.

And, you know what? It can’t wait until after the holidays – because there will always be holidays. There will always be excuses to eat delicious food – and excuses not to exercise. I love eating good food (and junk food, too!) and I am accident prone and lazy prone, too. The two habits combined have a nasty tendency to add unwanted pounds to my pear shaped frame that are hard to get rid of.

The disappointing thing is, I know how to lose weight. Do you guys remember when I got pregnant with little BB and vowed to not let the pregnancy mean even more baby weight to get rid of? Do you remember how exercise and calorie counting helped me maintain my weight throughout the entire pregnancy and how I then lost about forty pounds while nursing her that first year?

I know, it was awesome. But guess what? It all came back on after I weaned her because I had a really hard time letting go of those extra calories I was eating during the pregnancy / nursing days – and exercise got even harder to keep up with once I became a mom of two. And then old bad habits snuck back in, along with a few new ones.

I was looking through my archives at old posts I’ve written about diet and exercise, looking for those magic words thought would give me the motivation to get back to good. What I found instead was something a bit disheartening. It’s this old post I wrote back in 2008 about how my weight was getting out of control and how I needed to do something about it. In the post, I listed my three biggest struggles with weight loss, the three bad habits I really needed to kick and realized that nothing has really changed since then.

I have some ideas to get started losing weight again (like ditching coffee during the week since I drink it with so much sugar – and plans to start exercising EVERY day not just once a week), but most of them are still sitting in the “I’m going to do this really soon” phase and I’ve found I’m often a lot of talk.

I have a few things going for me, namely my husband has decided to get on board as he also needs to get back to losing weight. It’s a lot easier to diet when your partner is doing it, too. It sucks eating yogurt while your spouse has a bowl of delicious Talenti ice cream. So that will help.

Add in a new exercise bike just waiting to be set up this weekend and a good string of walking buddies that I try to get together with once a week – and I should be able to create a consistent work out routine very soon.

I’ve also decided to read a new diet book that looks very interesting, called Fit Moms For Life by Dustin Maher. It’s not one of those South Atkins Anti-some type of food fad diet book promising to help you lose 30 pounds in 30 days – it’s claim is that it will help you make changes you can stick with for life, as the book title says.

And the reviews around the web are down-right raving. That video above is the trailer for the book which you can buy on Amazon or through fitmomsforlife.com. Dustin Maher also has a lot of DVDs you can buy and a great blog with lots of fitness & nutrition tips.

So, hopefully the book will help and along with that and my new exercise bike and the fact that I’m putting this out here to all of you – that I am determined to drop the extra weight and get healthy so that I can live a good, long life keeping up with my kids and feeling fabulous. And I’m starting now.

  1. It seems like when i exercise more I eat more. I trying really hard to control my eating at night – dinner meal and after. I have been walking 1 hour 3-4 times a week and have lost 5 pounds so far. I have been eating more sweets (pecan pie) yummy and I think I will skip the scales till after the new year – hopefully.


  2. I can totally relate to this. I’m still fighting to break the same dumb, bad habits (diet soda, late-night snacking, not enough exercise) too. I seem to always get inspired before the holidays. I’m not sure why. Anyway, just wanted to say good luck and let you know that I’ll be working on all this stuff with you. 🙂


  3. after Noah gets here it’ll be back to losing the weight for me… I dont think I did too badly- so far I think I’ve gained 27-30 pounds but I know I don’t want to get stuck at 130 again like I was after Jacob not when I know I CAN reach 120 and pretty much stay within 120-125 if I try and if I exercise and watch what I eat. sure…its a little harder with a hypoactive thyroid but it is not impossible… I did it before and I looked and felt amazing. so I get ya.
