We’re halfway through the summer and I’ve read more than one five star read and several four star reads so I thought I’d take a minute to call attention to them in case you are looking for your next beach read. And no matter what genre you are looking for, I probably have something you’ll like.
Feeling like your brain is turning to mush? Engage your nerdy side with Everything is Tuberculosis by John Green. I listened to audiobook and was so riveted. He’s a great narrator and I wish he’d read all my nonfiction. I spent the weeks I was listening to this spouting weird Tuberculosis facts to everyone I know, so be warned.
Want to be completely immersed in another era? Code Name Helene by Ariel Lawson was the WW2 novel I never knew was missing from my life. My completely unruly book club came together to read this one and we all became huge fans of French 75 cocktails and 1940s fashion for a minute. I was also watching a lot of Hogans Heros that month so it was a real vibe. I laughed, I cried, I gasped when I found out it was based on a true story.
Want more rom com in a summer read? Ali Hazelwood always checks the box for me. This summer I read her foray into YA, Check and Mate. It’s about love, friendship, family, coming of age and chess. Lots of chess. You know Ali likes to keep it nerdy and this one was no exception. It’s tamer than her usual stuff but definitely not chaste. If you don’t know anything about chess you can learn it for free on Duolingo (not an ad, just cool) like me or just nod and smile like when your husband tells you about his job.
Want Whimsy and fairies and a neurodivergent heroine? Emily Wilde’s Encyclopedia of Fairies by Heather Fawcett was such an unexpected delight. I’ve truly never read anything like it. It’s got lush scenery that will make you want to go frolic in a field of wild flowers, exciting action and intrigue, closed door romance that takes a back seat to the rest of the story, and characters you will root for. I’m reading book two right now.
No time to read but want a quick win? Everybody’s Favorite Guy by Katherine Center is a short story on Amazon Prime reading that scratches the itch of a good romance in a short amount of time. Center is another sure thing author for me that is recommend to someone who wants some depth to their romance.
