Fall Into Reading 2008: The Challenge Begins

It’s no secret that I love to read, and do so with vigor. But with this whole new blog obsession, the last 6 months have been a not so delicate balance of squeezing reading time into the mix of my blogging time, along with family time, cooking time, cleaning time and sleeping time. Luckily, Katrina @ Callapidder Days is hosting another Fall Into Reading Challenge (she’s done it several years in a row now, but obviously this is my first time participating) in which you simply challenge yourself to read a certain number of books between now and December, and then try to do so. Seems easy enough right? Oh and there is a prize for one lucky reader – a $10 Amazon gift card – aka crack for the reader. So here’s my list for the challenge, which I will begin as soon as I finish reading Breaking Dawn and then finish mourning the end of the series that has completely stolen my heart (you know just like the other 234 series that I’m obsessed with):

  • Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte – I’m supposed to have this finished by the first Tuesday in October – I’m thinking that might not happen but I do want to read it by the end of October at least – It’s been in the back of my mind to read this for a few months now (since reading The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde) and was strengthened when 5 Minutes for Books chose it for their Classics Book Club.
  • Well of Lost Plots by Jasper Fforde – I’ve read the first two books this year and I’d really like to squeeze in one more before the year ends. I’m very much loving this series – it’s full of literary references, science fiction speculation and a little romance. From time travel to being able to literally jump into a book and so much more, this series is really something else and I highly recommend it (Eyre Affair was the first book).
  • – re-edit – In The Hand of the Goddess by Tamora Pierce – I’m back to planning to read this again since I can’t get my hands on a copy of How To Teach Filthy Rich Girls via the library. Anyway, this is the 2nd book in a series about a girl who wants to be a knight in a time when that just simply isn’t done. I’m very much looking forward to it and I’ve already checked it out of the library.
  • Mayflower by Nathaniel Philbrick – I bought this book a year ago and still really want to read it – I think November would be the perfect time for this one. Having my entire family from the New England area, and possibly being a descendant of some people on the Mayflower (my grandma is still trying to prove this) and being married to a Wampanoag – this whole topic intrigues me, and I also realized in college how little history I’ve learned and how flawed even that knowledge may be. You know, the whole History Books lie bit. So I like to read as much as I can about these things from as many sources as possible. Well rounded, that whole thing.
  • American Wife by Curtis Sittenfeld – And being an election year, why not follow that up with or precede it with this lovely new novel? I loved Prep, and I’m looking forward to checking out this one. I read somewhere that it may or may not be about Laura Bush and I mean, I don’t really care it that’s true or not, the whole concept of the story intrigues me and like I said, I was big fan of Prep.
  • Home by Julie Andrews – This book is always in the back of my mind, I really want to read it at some point – I would love to own this one, but will probably borrow it from the library since it’s still in hardcover. I try to buy paperback as much as possible. But, anyway, I love Julie Andrews and would love to know more about her life. You know, who she really is, when she’s not Mary Poppins or Princess Mia’s grandmother… This feels like a good book for December.
  • The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch – I promised my uncle I would read this a couple of months ago, but I haven’t gotten around to it yet. To be fair, Breaking Dawn. Seriously. But, truthfully I’m also just not typically into this genre so I’ve been delaying it even though I find it intriguing and I definitely would love to read it eventually, even if my uncle hadn’t asked me to. So I’ll try to have it read by Christmas – as my gift to him?
  • Rumors (Sequel to The Luxe) by Anna Godberson – I keep planning to read this next, you know just as soon as I finish reading “this” book, I’ll read Rumors. But it keeps not happening. Seems something else is always taking precedence, or the library is always out of stock when I do want to read it, but I loved the first book so much and I really want to read this one, too, so I’m going to try and find it and read it by the end of December. I can do it!

Other books for the Classics Bookclub that I will try to squeeze in:

  • the November book, still hasn’t been picked — maybe a Shakespeare play
  • A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens – I’ve read it twice already but I may read it again / review it at least. It’s actually one of my favorite Dickens books, so at least it would be enjoyable to reread, but I am not really one of those people who reread books very often so we’ll see. I’m placing my other challenge books ahead of this one in importance as I haven’t read them yet. Makes sense, right?

Anyway, that’s my list for this fall – so tell me, are you going to fall into reading this month?

@ Katrina : I think you’d really like the second book (Lost in a Good Book) – the first one was good but I’m with you that it wasn’t easy to get into. The second book was BETTER and really surprised me in a lot of ways.

I haven’t read the Host yet, but plan to. I have to admit the premise of the book isn’t really my typical “read” but I love her other books so much that I’ll definitely read it eventually. 🙂

Looks good! I read the Eyre Affair, but haven’t read any more of Jasper Fforde’s books yet. That first one was definitely “different,” and while I enjoyed it, I wasn’t pulled right in. I’ll have to think about giving that series another try, though. I have Twilight on my bookshelf, but haven’t dived into that series yet (I’m sure that once I do, I’ll have to read straight through them). Have you read The Host by the same author? Awesome book!

The Last Lecture is really great and will be a quick easy one day read. I was actually going to mention to you about the fall into reading challenge as I figured it would be up your alley. Looks like you knew about it already. 🙂

Mayflower was wonderful. I passed the book along to my dad, who also really liked it.
