Clearly, consistency isn’t my strong suit. With all the excitement of my family visiting last weekend I forgot to post a weekly update on my little “diet” altogether. Luckily I didn’t forget that I was dieting! I’ve actually done pretty well for the last two weeks. This morning when I weighed in I was down another pound and for the most part I’ve been very good diet-wise. Per usual, I’ve had my share of indulgences, but overall I continue to have a good handle on it. Now, where exercise is concerned… well let’s just say I might have forgotten about that part. The whole “newborn” card has been a favorite along with “yucky weather” and “I am le tired.”
Next month I’m planning to start a weekly exercise class at the Y. With our membership I can partake in several free courses and a few are on the weekends when Dan is home so I’m planning to pick one and try it. Hopefully we can find something for Dan and the kids to do while I’m in class so that I don’t have to drive myself because that requires a whole additional level of ambition that I’m not confident I have. These are the free classes being offered on the weekend:
- Step on Saturdays at 8:45am – This class is 75 minutes long and starts before 9am so the odds are very unlikely that I will choose it, although I do like step aerobics.
- Turbo Kick on Saturdays at 10am – This class is 60 minutes long and described as “an addictive workout that combines cardio kickboxing, sports drills, and simple dance moves in a party atmosphere.” It sounds fun but also a little scary.
- Family Recess on Sundays at 11am – This class is 45 minutes long and described as “a fun-filled workout with old school playground games! So fun, you’ll forget you’re supposed to be “working out”. Start with a “gym class” warm-up, then, divide into teams and recess begins! Playground games may include: Dodgeball, Steal the Bacon, Kickball, Tag, Capture the Flag and MORE! Bring friends and enjoy the friendly competition!” This in theory would sound fun to most people, but I’m seeing the names of a lot of sports I hated as a kid and also 11am is a big red flag for me. With my nursing schedule that is actually a mealtime in my world which could be a problem for me energy level wise.
- Zumba on Sundays at 4pm – This class is also 45 minutes. For those who haven’t heard of the wildly popular Zumba, “a fusion of Latin, Hip Hop, and International music – dance themes that create a dynamic, exciting, effective fitness system! It is a mixture of body sculpting movements with easy to follow dance steps.” Despite two left feet, for some reason this one is appealing to me the most although Turbo Kick is coming in at a strong second because I have a natural desire to kick things.
So, I think that’s about it for this week. My goals for the coming week are to:
- Not eat the entire pumpkin cheesecake I’m planning to buy this weekend in one sitting.
- Choose an exercise class and maybe fit in a workout of some other kind in the meantime.
And my questions for you guys this week are:
- Do you have a Y membership? If so, have you taken any exercise classes there and what was / is your impression of them?
- If you were going to take an exercise class and had to choose between the four listed above, which would you choose and why?

I took some classes at my old Y but not often because the times were never convenient for me. One was an old-school step class. The Zumba classes are supposed to be fun and a great workout. I have to say the playground class sounds fun to me!

Mmmmm, pumpkin cheesecake. That sounds delish. I think you should try the Zumba class, because then you can tell us what it’s like…I would love to try that but we don’t have any near us.

You’re too funny. You plan not to eat the cheesecake that you plan on eating!
