I know one minute I’m talking about how I don’t have enough time to read and woah is me and I enter book challenges and barely touch them and blah blah blah but when I saw Vivienne’s post about this Awesome Author Challenge hosted by At Home With Books, well… Let’s just say I’m not known for my willpower but I am known for my love of a good bandwagon. But seriously take a gander at the description of this book challenge:
“The idea behind this challenge is to read works by authors who have been recommended to you time and again, yet somehow you haven’t managed to read any books by those authors. These are the authors that everyone else tells you are awesome, thus the “Awesome Author Challenge” title.”
There are also many levels to this challenge, depending on your time restraints, etc:
The Levels Are:
- Easy: Choose three authors and read at least one title from each author.
- Moderate: Choose six authors and read at least one title from each author.
- Challenging: Choose ten authors and read at least one title from each author.
- Over-Achieving: Anything over ten authors.
So I read all this and thought, “Sweet I’ll just hop over to my GoodReads.com list and pick out three stellar authors. No problem. Except… when I got there, this happened…
- Ohhhh Ayn Rand, yup that’s a must. My friend Amanda loves her and apparently so does my sister-in-law and several of my bloggy buddies…
- George Orwell – seriously, isn’t it a crime that I haven’t read him yet? I just re-read the description of 1984 and seriously how have I not read this yet?
- You know who I’ve never read? Stephen King. Isn’t that just weird…
- Hmmm what about Wally Lamb? I have several friends who love him. But I’ve already got three books on my list… Hmm maybe I should just do the Moderate Level. I do have a whole year after all…
- Diana Gabaldon wrote that Outlander series that everyone is always talking about. She’d be a great addition to this challenge.
- Oohhhh Amy Tan – I’ve been meaning to read The Bonesetter’s Daughter…
- Oohhh wait there’s Neil Gaiman! I really want to read his books, too…
- And what about some current authors like Mia King? I’ve been drooling over her novels for like forever…
- Ohhh or Mary Roach? Her books look so cool and different from my usual reads…
- And you know Michelle Moran has written several books I’d like to read, too, and I’ve been seeing her all over the blogosphere…
And seriously I could not narrow it down from there, so I’m just admitting here and now that maybe I have a serious book addiction and I’m signing up for the Challenging level of the Awesome Authors Challenge in 2010. At least I’ll have a year to finish it.

I see your comments all the time on Nancy’s blog so I hope you don’t mind me chiming in here. Read Michelle Moran’s books! They are worth all the buzz in the blogosphere. I listened to Heretic Queen and just blew through Cleopatra’s Daughter. Next up for me is to read Nefertiti (her first book). The next one she is working on is about Madame Toussand. Should be interesting. This is a cool challenge. I just posted my current reading list on Nancy’s blog. Too many to repeat here but it has 4 new authors for me.

That is pretty much what happened to me when I was going through my books last week. I came up with ten authors just from my own bookshelves and figured I might as well do a challenge while I’m reading those books. Since I’ve been reading everyone else’s lists I’ve been tempted to add even more. 🙂
