It’s time for another Aloha Friday, the day that you take it easy and look forward to the weekend, in Hawaii and blogland anyway. As you should know by now, over at An Island Life, Kailani decided that on Fridays she would take it easy on posting and ask a simple question for you to answer. Nothing that requires a lengthy response.
If you’d like to participate, just post your own question on your blog and leave your link at An Island Life’s blog. Don’t forget to visit the other participants! It’s a great way to make new bloggy friends!
Some of you have read about my adventures in workout DVDs and the blatant lack of success I’ve had with them. I’m thinking maybe I should open my workout woes up to you the readers – I bet tons of you are super skinny and work out every day, right? What’s your secret? Is there a workout DVD you’d recommend to me (keeping in mind that I’m out of shape and prone to snarky comments and bailing out early) or a particular type of workout you really enjoy? A class you take? A gym you go to? A plastic surgeon you’d recommend? (just kidding… I think)
What’s your favorite way to work out / stay in shape?

I used to do Tae-bo but I stopped since my gym buddies are too busy nowadays. I just play badminton once a week.

I have been very slack in working out. I was doing well at the beginning of the year…January and February…then, well nothing. I stopped. For me, it is better to work out with someone. I try to get my hubby involved, but he hasn’t been interested in working out either. I have found some fun YouTube videos on dance and aerobics that are fun to work out to. I just need to do it.

The whole walking dvd thing is an odd concept I agree. It’s actually not bad although sometimes it reminds me of being back in PE! Ugh! But the music is fun & upbeat & my sister & I had fun, hmmm, politely (okay, so NOT) laughing @ some of the stuff that I enjoyed doing them.
Not a lot of help, am I?

@ Jenni : I’m planning to do a class next year when my son goes to preschool (so I won’t have to pay for daycare just to work out, or do it in the evening when I could be spending time with dh) but for right now I’m looking for something I can do at home that’s free-ish.

I actually am an aerobics instructor! This means that even when I REALLY AM NOT IN THE MOOD…I have to go work out anyway. Plus I get my gym membership for free! Have you tried any group classes at a gym? They’re fun (I’m biased)!

Working out does not come naturaly for me and is actually an extreme challenge – one that I face daily. I
work out 7 days a week. 5 days are cardio (treadmil) 2 days are weight/strength training.
If anyone has any secrets, I am all ears. 😀

My favorite exercise is blogging. So, sorry, I can’t recommend a successful one, lol. But at least it is enjoyable. My fingers aren’t fat. That has to count for something, right?

One great one is to have a “dance party” with your kids. Here’s an article I wrote about it several months ago: http://www.peekaboopicks.com/2008/04/16/dance-party/
It’s a really fun way to get active whenever you have time to do so. It works around your schedule and also includes your kids. That is one of the hardest things for me. When I say, “Okay, I’m going to work out now,” there’s always someone who would rather have me doing something else. When you’re pulled in a million different directions, it’s tough to have any time for yourself. With a “dance party,” you can have time with the kiddo and be doing something for your health at the same time.
As far as DVDs go, I love The Biggest Loser Cardio Max and Denise Austin Hit the Spot DVDs (there are a bunch). These DVDs are customizable, meaning there are a whole bunch of short workouts contained on the DVD. When you want to work out, you go to the selection page and pick which workouts you want to do each time. It’s great for moms, because we can cut out the crap we don’t have time for, and it helps to keep from getting bored.
If all else fails, go to the park and play like a kid. Don’t just sit and watch Monkey climb; climb after him, swing with abandon, chase him, all that fun stuff that we parents sometimes think we’re too grown-up to do! You’ll probably have so much fun you won’t realize you’re getting a great workout! 🙂

@ Sues2u2 : I don’t understand this walking DVD thing – you can’t exactly put on a DVD and then walk out the door… Explain please?
The water aerobics thing would be fun except I can’t swim and I’d love a more year round option. 🙂

Once upon a time when I was dating my Hubby (18 yrs ago!!!) I was a lifeguard & an EMT. While I was a lifeguard I taught swim lessons & had the most fun teaching water aerobics to Sr citizens. (They truly know how to “rock”!) Now? Ummmm, I have a pool that is going green(!!!) because I’ve been so caught up w/ my daughter’s broken arm saga (that is almost done!). Whew…
I do like the “walking” dvd’s that I loaned out to someone though. I think it’s Leslie Sansone. She tries to have fun & its not too bad.

I love doing Pilates. When I first started it I found it very hard but each time it gets easier, and it give you these nice lean muscles. Windsor Pilates has the best video’s for this I think.

This may sound crazy…but it works for me! I LOVE the Carmen Electra Striptease videos! You feel really dumb the first couple of times you do it, but it’s a great workout and your husband will thank you for your new moves 🙂 I also have a portable “stairclimber” machine that I walk on while I’m folding landry.

@ Gina : I’m in a similar boat, minus the having been fit before part. As soon as my son starts preschool I plan to take a class of some kind or at least join a gym.

I used to love light weight traing combined with running- I was in the best shape of my life before I got pregnant with Shaye. Now, I do nothing, which unfortunately shows. But I have faith that as soon as the girls are all in school full time- I will get back to the gym- that’s what I keep telling myself anyways.

Terrible of me- I know. I wish I had a favorite way to work out. I can say, it’s on my to-to list. Who knows when I’ll get to it, though. ;D
Happy Aloha Friday!
