Aloha Friday: e-readers, tablets and netbooks, oh my!

I get those Borders Rewards newsletters with coupons off books and all the latest news from Borders. Lately there’s been a lot of talk about ereaders – dozens of new devices are coming onto the market and what started as a vague novelty interest on my part has slowly turned into actual intrigue. This morning I was reading about one of Borders’ newest acquisitions the Cruz Tablet which is actually both an e-reader and a tablet PC – another new technology we’ve been hearing a lot about. It makes sense to me that they’d want to combine these two markets and the Cruz runs Android which makes the geek in me squeal with delight!

Now I wonder, would buying something that is just an e-reader be silly with the way technology seems to be heading? I don’t know. And the technology is so new that the Practical Jen in my head says, “Slow down! Wait until they’ve really had some time on the market before considering one. Besides you shouldn’t be spending frivolous money right now anyway.” Meanwhile the Jen Who Likes Stuff says, “You’re thinking about buying a little mini laptop soon – for the same price you could get that Cruz Tablet which would essentially accomplish the same thing in a smaller package with an e-reader built in. It’s where technology is heading – get on board!” I don’t know what I’ll end up getting yet or even if I’ll be getting anything or when, but in the meantime I know I’ll be scanning reviews, taking notes and daydreaming about Future Jen With the Cool New Gadgets.

So my Aloha Friday question this week is:

Do you own or want to own a netbook, tablet PC like the iPad or an e-reading device like the Kindle, Kobo, Cruz Tablet or Reader?

If money were no object, which one would you want to buy?

Just posted about my dream to own a netbook: http://therecommencement.wordpress.com/2010/09/01/the-netbook-question/

I’d love to have one to be able to work in a park or in a coffee place instead of at home but without carrying lots of weight around….

At home I prefer a big screen but when I’m somewhere else or traveling a netbook would be perfect!!!

I have a laptop that’s for work, though I use it at night to surf and blog. I have a Blackberry Storm smart phone (which I use to listen to audio books) and a Kindle, but I got the Kindle as a gift. I would love a Kindle 3 but since I use the Kindle so infrequently now I can’t justify the cost. When iPhone comes out with a Verizon edition I will seriously consider switching. When my new every 2 comes up next year I’ll definitely be switching from the Storm, I like it but it has some negatives, like very little app memory which is a pretty big negative.

I don’t own any of those. I don’t even feel the need to and I surely don’t have the $ to get any of them.

The material girl in me wants an ipad but the practical me would be just thrilled with an iphone that will get me through having a phone/camera/apps/music all in one and fit in my purse. Where the ipad would be lovely to have, I can’t see me “lugging” it around with all the other stuff I have to lug around..aka football time..the main time I’d use it. Not that it’s big and clunky like a lap top but you get my drift.
*yes I’m very behind the times on phone technology..Im doing good just to text w/my old fashioned cell phone.*

I would say an ipad…just because Apple seems to be on top of the tech world right now!

I’d love an iPad if money was no object. Some one I know has one and loves it.

Hubby surprised me with a Sony EReader, but if money was no object, I would want one of everything.

to be honest, i have no interest in such stuffs because i already have a laptop i can use for everything. And with how fast technology is changing, i feel it’s a waste to be buying stuffs that will be obsolete in the next few months… but it’s just me!

So, I have a laptop, a desktop, and an iphone.

I use the laptop to watch hulu, google reader, and read books after the kids are asleep (cause I can’t snuggle with my desktop). I use the desktop for the kids jumpstart games and working. I use the iphone for working on the go, to track calories, to update my blog, schedule stuff, listen to music, for directions, recipes, shopping, AAA roadside assistance, as a level, and while I’ve read some books on it, it’s a little small for the speed at which I read.

The ipad seems like a good reading device (and they have apps to read books from kindle/borders/etc)…and I’d use it to replace my laptop, but it’s still expensive for minimal usage. Esp when my iphone (or desktop, if I got a comfier chair) can do all the same stuff.
