Fall Crafts: Simple Ways to Celebrate the Season with your Preschooler

We’ve been doing lots of fun fall crafts these days and I thought I’d share some of them with you. My four year old has been on a coloring / crafting spree lately and I thought I’d take an opportunity to get all Mom Geek on him and teach him a little bit about the seasons while he was at it.

Tracing Leaves

Materials needed:

  • fallen leaves
  • construction paper
  • crayons
  • safety scissors

Big Kid Version:

Our first craft involved going outdoors and picking some fallen leaves. Back indoors we traced the leaves on construction paper and then decorated them, then cut them out for decoration. My four year old is really still learning how to cut paper so I did most of the cutting myself, letting him practice a bit with the safety scissors that we literally just bought for him.

Tiny Tot Version:

I also let my 1 year old scribble on another piece of paper. When she had had her fill, I traced a leave on a nicely scribbled chunk of paper and then cut it out so she could have her leave, too.

Four Seasons Trees

the four seasons

Materials Needed:

  • construction paper
  • scissors
  • crayons

How We Did It: I cut a piece of printer paper into four rectangles and then drew a tree trunk on each of them. Then I wrote the name of the season on the top and explained to him how the weather changes in each season. We drew snow on the tree and ground for winter, flowers and berries for Spring with fluffy clouds in the sky, a big hot sun and green leaves for summer and of course colorful leaves with leaves on the ground and a pumpkin for good measure for the fall. He asked a lot of questions, too, which I thought was awesome.

Freestyle Holiday Coloring

I'm not sure if that pumpkin is supposed to have a body or not

Materials Needed:

  • plain paper
  • crayons
  • one kid with a great imagination!

Last night I let my four year old loose with some crayons and paper. He has continued our seasonal crafting theme with this cute picture which seems to combine Halloween with Christmas.

Next up on our slate: I’m planning to cut out some orange circles to make our own paper pumpkins and jack-o-lanterns!

  1. That is one seriously proud little man you’ve got there. Tell him he creates beautiful (or seriously awesome!) pix.

Wonderful way to start a 90F+ day. Autumn leaves. sigh…
