Apparently the new big thing is choosing our favorite things from the last decade because recapping the last year wasn’t hard enough. But when Birdie Bookworm wrote about her favorite books from the Twenty Teens I was intrigued to consider what would be on my list.

Luckily I’ve been keeping notes over the years thanks to Goodreads.com and my blog so I was able to scroll through the past ten years of reading in about twenty minutes. I jotted down all the books that really stand out still as a favorite and then I was like, “Nah that’s too many” so then I got super picky and somehow narrowed it down to ten. Some reading years have nothing to show for themselves. I blame preschoolers. Just in general.

And now I can humbly present to you the 10 Best Books that I read in the last decade.

(In order of year read)

1. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows | This book has the longest title ever in the history of time but I forgive it because it was extraordinary. My book club read it back in 2010. It was recently turned into a movie on Netflix which is also terrific. This one will make you want to hop on a plane to Guernsey immediately so hide your luggage now.

2. The Mother Daughter Book Club by Heather Vogel Frederick | It’s hard to believe I read this ten years ago and now my daughter is old enough to read it herself. I still want to start a mother daughter book club of my own.

3. Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery | Yes, I really was the last one to the party but I make up for my tardiness with fervent adoration. I fell hard for this series basically immediately. I see so much of my daughter in Anne Shirley which just adds to the love fest.

4. Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell | This was my first Rowell book so it remains my favorite even though I’ve loved all the others as well. If she could never stop writing books that would be really helpful. This one speaks to my little nerdling soul.

5. Cinder by Marissa Meyer | I’m obsessed with this series and it took a lot of restraint not to list all the books (Cress is probably tied for favorite though). This is the dystopian steam punk space traveling fairy tale reimagining that you never knew you were missing.

6. To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han | This is the feel good YA love story to win them all. It’s so sweet and it sucked me in completely. This one is also a Netflix movie and it is also thoroughly enjoyable! It’s hot cocoa and a chocolate chip cookie in book form.

7. My Lady Jane by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton and Jodi Meadows | This book sounds absurd from the description and it’s written by three different people. It’s Jane Grey’s life story reimagined and there are people turning into horses and stuff. It shouldn’t have worked and yet I am passionately in love with this book and recommend it all the freaking time. Good news, they have written more books so the fun doesn’t have to stop here.

8. The Bookshop on the Corner by Jenny Colgan | I love me a good wanderlust starting over love story and this one continues to be my favorite. Scottish accents, descriptions of the Scotland countryside and a true love letter to books and reading.

9. The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas | This one blew up the internet and for good reason. It was so timely but also so well written. It could have been too heavy but somehow it wasn’t. I still haven’t seen the movie – I don’t want to ruin such a perfect book and I’m too chicken. But man I loved this book.

10. Sisters by Raina Teglemeier | Yes, I am including a graphic novel aimed at tweens here. That’s how amazing it is. Teglemeier’s books completely changed the way I look at graphic novels and opened the door wide open for me. Honestly one of the highlights of the last year was reading dozens of graphic novels with my kids and sharing in something they love. This one continues to be my favorite of the bunch.
